The few ounces of geek in me are just jumping around in sheer happiness. Finally B5 is back where we can see it comfortably without having to go through browsers and obscure websites.

Let’s hope they did a good digital transfer.

Babcom Out.

Spread the love

  1. Pardon me…. but HOT DAMN! I love that show!

Well there’s June yard work shot to hell.

  2. Only one human has survived battle with a Minbari cruiser. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else.

  3. “It was the year of fire… the year of destruction… the year we took back what was ours. It was the year of rebirth… the year of great sadness… the year of pain… and the year of joy. It was a new age. It was the end of history. It was the year everything changed. The year is 2261. The place: Babylon 5.”

    Best intro ever!! 😀

  4. Hooray. I’m done with TNG. Working my way through The Outer Limits. About to embark on SG1. Must add this to my list. I’m trying to cover the great Sci-fi of my youth again.

  5. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never seen it. Will I be impressed or disappointed with B5?

P.S., I’m so over all of these franchises that have been gang-raped by PC SJWs. I warned my Star Wars loving son that Disney would kill SW and I was right. Star Trek (current) is a disaster. Welcome to the woke century…

    1. ‘Babylon 5’ is a fantastic series, possibly the greatest science fiction series ever shown on television. Arguably one of the greatest works of sci-fi/fantasy in any medium. There are lots of people who compare it favorably to Tolkien.

By the standards of 2018, the CGI work is a bit below par, but it was one of the first television or film productions to use CGI instead of motion control models for spaceships and the like. It holds up, but don’t expect to be blown away now like we were back in the Nineties.

But the heart and soul of Bab 5 is the characters, the deep story, and the writing. The first few episodes are a bit shaky as everyone finds their feet, the final season is a bit shaky too (I won’t go into details, but there was a lot of executive meddling and network shenanigans.)

If you’ve never seen Bab 5 and consider yourself a sci-fi fan, you owe it to yourself to watch the series.

Trust Ivanova. Trust yourself. Anyone else? Shoot ’em.

    2. You will be impressed. The coherent story lines, no Holodeck bullscat, aliens are, well, alien. Characters are real, with real issues (like alcoholism).

The show was designed from the beginning to last 5 seasons. And it did.

There is no Social Justice in the Bab5 universe.

Music is great, the special effects are great (no swooshy-swooshy flying through space like it’s an atmosphere. Wanna blow the guy on your tail away? Flip 180 and blast, then flip back and continue your vector.) Physics is mostly followed, such as a fall from a central spine on a rotating station.

It’s good. Really good. Really really good. One of those shows that sticks with you.

Did I mention the music? The opening cred music changes every year to follow the overall theme of that season, One year it sounds guarded, one year very tense, one year totally down, etc…

The actors are great. Watch for a guest role by Melissa Gilbert that is positively fantastic. Bill Mumy as Lanier. Steven First (Flounder from Animal House) as Vir Coto, and it just gets better as those are the supporting actors to the main characters.

Sh…stuff happens, bad stuff happens to good people, good stuff happens to bad people, even the background characters are well done.

Just… Just watch it. Buy the soundtrack. Buy the DVDs. Totally worth it.

    3. From what I remember of the series (I was in grade school and middle school while it was on air, loved it and was turned off by Star Trek), I don’t remember much in the way of Leftwad talking points that weren’t thoroughly beat down over the course of the show. Hell, one of the overarching themes is rebellion against a corrupted government, so there’s that.

The CGI was top-notch in the mid-90s, and improved markedly as the series went on, but it’ll look dated by late-’10s standards. Such is the measure of progress, no?

I like it enough that I have the DVD boxsets from a while back, as well as the movie collections, and have been contemplating dusting this old warhorse off for another round. Might see if Amazon’s version is better before I do so.

    4. I think overall you will be impressed, though there are some weak plot lines. Remember that the CGI is ANCIENT, and that will help a lot.

  6. Babylon 5 is the anti-Trek. If you’re suffering from NextGenerationItis, B5 is the cure. While it was running, it was some of the best character-driven drama and tragedy- not just in SF, but ON TV. Hellacious dialog writing, great acting, and good writing. Plus, the women are smokin’ hot.

Caveat:You’ll have to just suffer through Season 1, like the rest of us did. Season 1 has its share of clunker episodes and Michael O’Hare is no Bruce Boxleitner. Season 2 is where the chemistry kicks in and B5 really takes off and flies.

“What do I want, Mister Morden? I’d like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I want to look up into your lifeless eyes and wave, like this. Can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?”

…Well? What are you waiting for?

      1. >> BUT…. answers needed in Season 5 are in Season 1. And questions asked in Season 1 won’t be resolved till Season 5. <<

        “I have always been here.”

      2. Who are you? (The Vorlon’s Question)
What do you want? (The Shadow’s Question)
Where are you going? (Techno Mage’s Question)
Do you have anything worth living for? (The First One’s Question)

          1. Best question from humanity: “Zog? What do you mean, zog? Zog what?? Zog yes, zog no?!?

            😉

  7. Or, you could have bought the DVD sets when they were in the bargain bin @
    $Bigbox store…
    Including the specials and movies.
“It was the dawn of the Second Age of Mankind…”

    1. Yup. Still have it on DVD. Will never part with it. Not even sure I’d let someone borrow it. Might make them watch it with me, though.

    1. OTOH, Delenn in a little black cocktail dress is a lot better on a 55” tv than it was on the dinky 22” I had in my bedroom as a teen.
