So he had a small amount of dynamite in the hole and was throwing matches at it? Not a common technique where I come from, so I was baffled at first.
That does look like flammable gas was inserted and lit.
Fuel-air explosions are ALWAYS a good idea (at least until the police show asking pointed questions).
