OK, so what’d he do? Handloads, probably. Double charge, probably.

Most .44 Magnum loads fill too much of the case for a double charge – I think it’s more likely he used the wrong powder; if you want a maximum charge of, say “296” powder, and instead use “231” . . . a kaboom is likely.
