By Giant African Land Snails. When did this happen?

Authorities are asking residents not to handle the creatures. Anyone who finds a suspicious snail is advised to call the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services help line at 888-397-1517. Workers or volunteers will ID and collect the snails before taking them to be killed in a freezer.

“That’s sort of a kinder, gentler way to get rid of them,” Gaskalla explains.

I don’t do “kindly” with stuff like that. I just placed an order for a ton of salt and, in the meantime, if I see anything like this in my backyard, it gets a shot of double ought with a napalm chaser.

  1. The shells might be worth something… Decorative, if nothing else.

Also, someone has to say it: If you are ready for the zombies, house-eating snails are nothing!

  2. oh grand yet another outside invasive species in florida..which means considering all the water ways and the USUAL weather pattern here in Texas..we might end up with them too. Sigh…some people are entirely too stupid.

  3. I saw a suspicious snail the other day. It kept looking all around real furtively, like it didn’t want anyone to know what it was doing. Its eye stalks were whipping around like pinwheels. It was suspicious of everything – and kept checking everything around it very carefully.
