Divemedic has a common question about Miami versus Miami-Dade which is something those of us living here are responsible for the confusion.
Miami is not the same thing as Miami-Dade County: one is the city and the there is obviously the county. Lemme show you:
The blue-dotted line area comprises a lot (not all) of the county while highlighted part is the City of Miami. But why the confusion? There are a LOT of towns, cities, unincorporated areas and the such within the county who most people in the US and the world have never heard of. If you live in Miami Beach (a city on its own), you can get away with it. If you are an old school gambler, somebody says they live in Hialeah, you know is somewhere down here. If you say you are from Palmetto Bay, Opa-Locka, Florida City, Doral or Medley, etc. most of the people would look at you like “Huh?” That is when asked where are we from, we just summarize and say Miami. We don’t say Miami-Dade county because it sounds snotty as if we were trying to be special and above everybody else. I hated the change of county name from Dade to Miami-Dade for that and other reasons.
I hope I made sense with my explanation.
If you’re from Hialeah, you have more pressing issues…HaHaHa-ialeah. Like a nasty traffic jam on the way to the Santeria store.
Yes, back in the 80s, my friends from Kendall would write “Unincorporated Dade County, FL 33175” on their envelopes.
And don’t forget Key Biscayne is technically a “city,” which must be some sort of federal government-FBI witness relocation matter.
There are parts near Kendall that are unincorporated. Lots of those around the county.
