New York City health commissioner Oxiris Barbot resigned on Tuesday, after clashing with Mayor Bill de Blasio for months over the city’s coronavirus response.

“I leave my post today with deep disappointment that during the most critical public health crisis in our lifetime, that the Health Department’s incomparable disease control expertise was not used to the degree it could have been,” Barbot wrote in her resignation letter. “Our experts are world renowned for their epidemiology, surveillance and response work. The city would be well served by having them at the strategic center of the response not in the background.”

At a Tuesday press conference, de Blasio did not directly say whether Barbot was fired.

NYC Health Commissioner Resigns with ‘Deep Disappointment’ after Clashing with De Blasio

If the name sounds familiar to our readers, is because this lady has been in our posts before. Now she was the leader of NYC Health and she moans bitterly about the expertise going to waste. What expertise? Maybe this one from February 9, 2020?

What was the misinformation this health expert was denouncing? The “racist” and “dangerously” racist decision by President Trump to ban travelers from China on January 31st.

Almost 4 months later and de Blasio finally gets rid of this dangerous quack, but probably for something political rather than health-wise.

New York City has seen over 23,000 deaths and 231,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus. More than 2.5 percent of the city’s population has been infected.

Oh yes, so much for that “incomparable disease control expertise.”

  1. A small correction … we hope this will turn out to be the largest public health crisis in our lifetimes.

  2. 231,000 confirmed cases and over 23,000 deaths?

By those numbers, in NYC the ‘Rona has a fatality rate of ~10%. (According to the CDC, it’s slightly higher: 10.35%. See link below.) New York State’s (excluding NYC) rate is 4.68%. Combined it’s 8.15%.

In other areas it’s running below 2%, sometimes below 1%.

Are they admitting that under the NYC Health Department’s (and Mayor de Blasio’s) “leadership”, NYC’s death rate is 5-10 times the rest of the country’s?

Much-maligned Florida, for example, has had 481,668 cases, with a fatality rate of 1.46%. Texas’ fatality rate is 1.6%. The U.S. overall is 3.3% (no doubt skewed by NY, NJ, CA, etc.).

But please, let the MSM keep telling us how Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio crafted a first-class, science-driven model for COVID response, while Governor DeSantis failed in every way.

(Source: CDC data. Mind you, the “Cases/100K” and “Deaths/100K” are per 100K total population; positive, negative, and untested. You need to divide one by the other to get the death rate of positive cases.)
