So I went to a Gun Buyback.

This one may get long, so bear with me.

You may remember the post I did about the legality of holding a gun buyback in a church with a school attached (or vice-versa).

And since Miramar PD answered with the proper response, I had an idea to participate and get some cash for a gun.

This shotgun was in the attic of my wife’s parents for Lord knows how many years and if I recall correctly, it belonged to her great great grandfather or something like that. I forget what markings it had, but I was a manufacturer that disappeared in the early 1900s and the particular model came to exist in  the early 1890s.

And the darned thing was in really bad shape. First, is from the era prior to smokeless powder, so shooting with modern shells was out of the question. One firing pin was missing and the other was welded shut with rust. The hammer springs were broken or missing, the triggers did not move and the stock was broken. Do I even have to describe the conditions of the barrels inside and out?

The only thing working were the ejectors, fancy that.

Rather than get rid of it, I thought about the John Candy movie The Great Outdoors and had the idea of making a lamp like the one in flick. But I kinda forgot about it and the shotgun has been relegated to the back of my office closet for 20 years or so. I recently decided to do a honest-to God cleaning, found it and pulled it out. When the notice of the buyback appeared, I went “why not, right?”

So I drove to the church and got in line. As they asked, the shotgun was in the back of my truck and I just waited till it was my turn.  I was approached by a young lady who very politely thanked me for coming and gave me a goody bag courtesy of the commissioner involved in the organizing of the gun buyback.

Notebook, pen and hand sanitizer. Not quite the Oscar’s bag of swag. Fiscally responsible though.

Next, things got interesting and it was a good thing I was wearing a mask. I was approached by a lady representing the League of Women Voters of Broward County offering gun locks. She started to give the “stats” of the dangers of guns at home and I bit hard on my tongue not to argue. I did score a couple of gun locks that will proudly be attached to my Sporting Rifles in honor of them just because League of Women Voters has been notoriously Anti Gun in Florida and are willing to go to committees and speak their piece. Their last intervention was the opposition of Church Carry.

And if you are suddenly thinking “Hey, how come they are doing their version of Project Childsafe?” You are not alone, that thought crossed my mind, but again I kept my mouth shut and at the end of the day, I can’t disagree with even the enemy distributing gun locks. But it was what was on the other side of that pamphlet that shows they are sort of copying our side when it comes to real Gun Safety:

That is literally ripped from the Eddie Eagle Program.  For a bunch of people who despise the NRA and falsely denounced Eddie Eagle as a way to get kids into guns, it demands a enormous level of hypocrisy to steal from it for your brownie points scorecard.

Next I was approached by this young lady:

This was a horrifying concept with the prices of ammo the way they are. But  she was a very jovial person and explained to me they take apart the rounds (I saw her friend with a bullet puller) and make jewelry out of the inert components. At my request, she is showing the bracelets with casings and also the pendant. She was such a nice person, I simply did not have the heart to even think about making jokes on ammo prices and wasting good cartridges.

The officers of Miramar PD were polite and friendly. They were extending invitations to an event next week just to shoot the shit with regular folks. Not a bad idea IMHO.

The Crime Stoppers flyer was another civilian gentleman who briefly explained the concept.

The line moved slowly and this was the vehicle in front of me:

I counted 3 single shot shotguns, one pump and I believe one of those cheap Rohm revolvers. And I have my suspicion that the shotgun on the left fails to conform with the NFA regulations. No wonder Gun Buybacks are called evidence destruction gatherings.

Then it came my turn and my shotgun was safely retrieved. There was so much rust in that thing, the officer was probably wondering if his tetanus shot was up to date.

Next task for the experts on site was to find markings and a serial number.

I overhead one of the cops commenting that the shotgun was older than he was. A more accurate description would be that nobody in Broward county was alive when that thing was manufactured, sometime before the Rough Riders assaulted San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War.

I believe this gentleman was the “appraiser.”

Eventually I was offered $100 and I gladly accepted. They will be properly invested in the purchasing of ammunition, of course.

And that was the loot so far when I left. The buyback had been on for a couple of hours at most, so I have no idea what they ended up collecting.

So basically, my “infiltration” in enemy territory and scoring loot was successful.  And as my wife has pointed out many times, I can keep my trap shut and not get myself in trouble and avoid pissing people off just because.

But my tongue is sore.

Great movie finally on Amazon

I had to fly yesterday so I was looking on Amazon for some Prime movies to download for free to watch on the plane.

Then I saw it: Dredd.

If you are unfamiliar with it, Dredd is a 2012 action film based on the character Judge Dredd from the 2000 AD comics.  It was a box office flop.

It was overshadowed by much more popular comic book movies The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.  It was poorly advertised and the trailer is shit.

But I will tell you, Dredd is a fantastic movie.  Truly an excellent action movie.  Karl Urban is an absolutely wonderful Judge Dredd.

CinemaWins breaks down why this is such a good movie.  Of course, there are spoilers, but really, the plot of this movie is so straightforward with no twists or reveals that it’s impossible to spoil the plot.  But that is exactly what you want in a gritty action movie.  Good guys shooting bad guys in a visually stunning way with great sound and soundtrack.

If you are interested:

I highly recommend that if you are a fan of action movies, watch Dredd on Amazon Prime.

It will be 1 hour and 35 minutes of solid, violent entertainment.

Let it burn – Portland Apple edition

From C-Net:

At WWDC, Tim Cook takes a moment to talk about Black Lives Matter and coronavirus

Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference addressing two major events affecting the world at the moment: the Black Lives Matter movement and the worldwide conronavirus pandemic.

Cook said Monday that it’s time for the US to “aim higher to build a future that lives up to our ideals” of equality — and to take action. He highlighted Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative, which will distribute $100 million to “challenge systemic barriers that limit opportunity for communities of color in the critical areas of education, economic equality and criminal justice.” And he also talked about the company’s new developer entrepreneur camp for black developers.

Apple published this announcement on their website:

Apple launches major new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects to challenge systemic racism, advance racial equity nationwide

Apple today announced a set of major new projects as part of its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI) to help dismantle systemic barriers to opportunity and combat injustices faced by communities of color. These forward-looking and comprehensive efforts include the Propel Center, a first-of-its-kind global innovation and learning hub for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); an Apple Developer Academy to support coding and tech education for students in Detroit; and venture capital funding for Black and Brown entrepreneurs. Together, Apple’s REJI commitments aim to expand opportunities for communities of color across the country and to help build the next generation of diverse leaders.

What did that $100 million dollars buy them?

Fuck ’em.  Let it burn.

Leftist Utopia always required genocide – Genghis Khan and land conservation edition

The leading principles of the Left are:

    1. It is possible to obtain Utopai – i.e. universal peace and prosperity – through the implementation of top-down government policy created by educated experts and technocrats.
    2. To achieve Utopia requires the mass extermination of everyone who is incompatible with Principle No. 1

Hilter thought if he got rid of the Jews, Roma, gays, political dissidents, non-Aryans, he could achieve Utopia, call the Thousand Year Reich.

Stalin targeted dissidents, the well-educated, Jews, and anyone else that he deemed a threat to him.

Mao targeted dissidents, anyone educated in the West, landowners, business leaders, college professors, anyone who was smart enough to question his plans.  Pol Pot and Castro did the same.

Today’s elite are not going to go down the path of Soviet-style Communism.  They prefer the Chinese model of totalitarian government with an economy run by prosperous monopolistic mega-corporations that operate in concert with the government.

They still need a reason to commit genocide to move in the direction of Utopia.

The new reason to justify the mass extermination of human beings is Climate Change.

The insane people at The Guardian published an article that sets up the historical precedent for that.

Why Genghis Khan was good for the planet
Laying waste to land scrubbed 700m tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

His empire lasted a century and a half and eventually covered nearly a quarter of the earth’s surface. His murderous Mongol armies were responsible for the massacre of as many as 40 million people. Even today, his name remains a byword for brutality and terror. But boy, was Genghis green.

Genghis Khan, in fact, may have been not just the greatest warrior but the greatest eco-warrior of all time, according to a study by the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Energy. It has concluded that the 13th-century Mongol leader’s bloody advance, laying waste to vast swaths of territory and wiping out entire civilisations en route, may have scrubbed 700m tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere – roughly the quantity of carbon dioxide generated in a year through global petrol consumption – by allowing previously populated and cultivated land to return to carbon-absorbing forest.

Killing 40 Million people for the planet.

We hated rubes in flyover country don’t fit well into the Left’s machinations.  We like our cars, and our small towns and rural communities make large-scale public transportation difficult.  We like houses with yards and generally prefer our independence to people who live packed into apartments.

One of the things Biden has done which has flown under the radar is this:

The U.S. commits to tripling its protected lands. Here’s how it could be done.

In an executive order issued on January 27 to address the climate crisis, President Joe Biden ordered a pause on new oil and gas leases on public lands and created a White House office of environmental justice. He also quietly committed his administration to an ambitious conservation goal—to protect 30 percent of U.S. land and coastal seas by 2030.

That target, referred to as “30 by 30” by the conservation community, is backed by scientists who argue that reaching it is critical both to fighting climate change and to protecting the estimated one million species at risk of going extinct.

This is a visual of what the EO is going to do.

That’s a lot of land.  Land with people on it and used for farm land.

How are they going to do that?

Perhaps the Genghis Kahn approach?

If you depopulate the land and get rid of tens of millions of people (74 million Trump voters for example) that’s a lot fewer mouths to feed which requires a lot less farmland to grow food on.

Imagine the world of 2000 AD, in which Americans live in two coastal mega-cities, fed on community gardens and protein derived from bugs.  But outside the walls, instead of a nuclear wasteland of the Cursed Earth, it is protected wilderness that the elites will have the privilege of getting permits to visit.

Allowing Middle-America to return to carbon-absorbing forest and grassland, it’s what Ghengis Khan would have done.

Florida’s “Mostly Peaceful Protest” Bill approved by the Legislature.

The bill was sent to the Governor’s desk and awaits signature.

And as usual read the text. This is final version.

Let me copy/paste a totally amateur summary I wrote for a buddy of mine. It does come attached with an IANAL warning:

1) Defunding the Police is verbotten as it may result in your municipality suddenly be without state funds.
2) No unlawfully blocking streets. But you can march and do your thing duly permitted
3) No municipality can order cops NOT to stop rioting & looting. If they do, the waiver of sovereign immunity is null and void and those who suffered damages can sue the shit out of the local gov.
4) Assaulting a person during a riot is a Misdemeanor of the 1st degree
5) Aggravated assault during a riot gets you higher sentencing
6) Battery under riot is a 3rd degree felony
7) Aggravated battery under riot gets a higher sentencing
8) (New) Mob intimidation is a misdemeanor of the 3rd degree. (A person arrested for a violation of this section shall be held in custody until brought before the court for admittance to bail in accordance with chapter 903.) <— that means no catch and release. You will get to see a judge and you will wait till that happens however long it takes.
9) Touch a cop during a riot, automatic 6 month sentence.
10) Defacing monuments, felony third degree plus must pay repair costs.
11) Defacing memorials, felony second degree.
12) Burglary during a riot (looting) Felony first degree.
( The above also no Catch and Release.)
13) Cyberintimidation (Doxxing, threats, etc) Misdemeanor 1st degree.
14) Commit a riot where property is damaged and people are injured or imminent danger of injury, 3rd degree felony.
15) Aggravated riot, (25 or more people cause bodily harm and/or damage to property in excess of $5K, endangers movement of vehicles, threatens to use force, Felony 2nd degree.
16) Incite a riot, felony 3rd degree. (Includes teaching how to riot, make weapons for the riot, etc)
There are more things and nuances but IANAL.

This will crap of harassing people while trying to peacefully eat will become illegal in Florida.

Truthfully there is nothing in the bill about making it easier to kill them poor peaceful protesters either by car or other means and we were told by the Media and other propaganda devices. I don’t see anything new elevated to Forcible Felony which is the standard for legally use Deadly Force that was not there before.

776.08 Forcible felony.—“Forcible felony” means treason; murder; manslaughter; sexual battery; carjacking; home-invasion robbery; robbery; burglary; arson; kidnapping; aggravated assault; aggravated battery; aggravated stalking; aircraft piracy; unlawful throwing, placing, or discharging of a destructive device or bomb; and any other felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any individual.

I think what pissed Liberals off about this bill in general is that they are no longer able to use Freedom of Speech as a shield to excuse bad actions during a riot. If future protesters have some brains, they will police themselves and beat the daylights out of anybody trying to transform a truly constitutionally protected march into looting and displays violence.

And again, that is my take.
