  1. The cop repeatedly says, “Don’t pull it out.” That would be the time to not conduct yourself as if you were attempting to pull out a gun.

  2. Since Minnesota isn’t a must inform state, he could have shut his trap about being armed and been really fidgety and not triggered a violent response from the officer.

Something in this vid that I don’t care for is Officer Yanez had his hand on his gun from the moment he enters the camera’s arc. I don’t think that was appropriate for a taillight out stop.

    1. According to a source I read (gotta find it) there had been an armed robbery earlier that day and the description of the male fit Castile’s to a “T” but was not him. I can’t say if that had an influence or not.

      1. It was a convenience store robbery several days previously. The police followed Mr. Castile for two miles before pulling him over. I think that Officer Yanez’s suspicion played a role in his behavior. The fact that Mr. Castile didn’t announce he had a permit first, just that he had a firearm may have fed the officer’s worries? Mr. Castile should have slowed down and discussed every move with Officer Yanez beforehand. My wallet is in… My firearm is…. Maybe if Officer Yanez screamed, “Freeze!”? Maybe if Mr. Castile wasn’t stoned?

Originally I thought this was an officer shooting a permit holder without a good reason. Looking at the evidence released, I probably would have voted for acquittal. A lot of lives ruined in fifteen seconds. No one came out of this looking good. RIP Philandro Castile.

  3. The video doesn’t clear up much Imo. I think you are right that both made some mistakes but I think the officers was the more serious fuck up. But we will never know because we don’t actually know what happened in the vehicle. Up until the extremely quick escalation and to when the officer shoots it seemed pretty standard traffic stop. Maybe the best thing that can come of this is another argument in favor of body cams.

What gets me though is I doubt any of us non leo would have come out of this beating the rap if a similar non traffic stop situation could be construed.

And the marijuana thing I think is a red herring. You can smoke earlier in the day and be sober. You can smoke 10 minutes before and be capable of high level function and rational thought. Saying well he smoked marijuana shouldn’t be a mitigating factor or and excuse until we can answer with precision. How high was he? Was he currently high? How long ago did he smoke? How much did he smoke?

    1. And since we cannot tell which way pot affects people, we stay the f*** away from it. Same reason we stay away from booze and pills if we carry:
We do not give the prosecution nails to build out coffin.

      1. I agree good idea to stay away from when carrying but, it is not so much that we can’t tell that I am saying, but more of a so what if they are drunk or high?
That doesn’t necessarily tell us anything.

I notice we are quick to say that well he was drunk, or well he was high so that’s why such and such happened. I’m just worried it becomes or has become a near instant absolution for one party and near instant condemnation of another when in fact it may have played zero effect.
