“You don’t need a gun, and if you do, you don’t need that many boolits in it.”

The very few times I had been to downtown Miami Dade, I used the Metro Rail. it is impossible to get a cheap and decent parking spot down there and they charge you up the keister for whatever vehicular real state they have to offer.  So I drive to a nearby Metro rail station, park my truck for a cheap prize and take a wagon downtown.

It does not take but one trip to observe the predatory fauna to make you decide you don’t use public transpo without carrying.  Mind you, as with all thin  human things, most users are nice people who just want to be transported and they mind their own business, but you get to see from time to time those who will take you down if you look like steak to be had.

Oh yes, the parking lots of the stations? The one I use is big, several stories and even with patrols, they do not feel like safe environments.

And Miami’s Public Transportation is not even close to be as violent as Chicago or NY or Oakland-SanFran, but hell if I go unarmed and I am sure I am not the only one… maybe that is why we don’t have that many issues.

  1. Concealed carry is illegal on the cta buses and trains, currently crime is way up. Yesterday a felon with a gun shot a guy in the back to seal his backpack

  2. Carrying a firearm is, effectively, illegal on Portland’s public transit system. It’s also verboten by my employer’s policy and my security guard license…

I’ve been assaulted on my way into the office once (pair of teenagers harassing me and doing that “shark bump” thing trying to provoke me into counter attacking them, so they could claim defense when they kicked my ass). I had just stepped off the bus.

I was also once stuck between two homeless meth heads who got into a shouting match at each other… First tweaker pulled a bowie knife from his boot, second tweaker countered with a goddamn machete. I was inside the bus shelter trying to stay out of the rain, the only path out would have put me within a yard of one or the other of them. (Luckily this was directly across the street from the police precinct parking lot and a trio of cops came running.)

I’m seriously considering buying one of those “unbreakable” umbrellas. Twenty years of HEMA and SCA have made me really rather good at hitting people with a stick and it wouldn’t raise much suspicion around the Pacific Northwest to carry an umbrella everywhere. I’d much rather have a gun, obviously…

  3. Bernie Goetz was the bad guy? I guess a missed that memo.

Also, yeah, when CCW first went mainstream in FL you couldn’t carry on the Metro Rail. I used that and the people move a lot because my dad’s law firm was down town next to the station and i could get to his office from Dadeland station faster that US1 traffic or from his office to the courthouse and law library with the people mover when I clerked for him.

The thugs would stalk the station platforms knowing people were unarmed. Then some guy with a CCW shot a thug on a platform and FL changed the law.

Bans on CCW on public transport in Chicago only made attacks at El stations worse since thugs knew riders were unarmed.

Yes, I forgot you are a young whippersnapper. Bernard was the Zimmerman of the time and the case made it international news. He was painted as the irrational vigilante that attacked some poor black youth who were just asking for some change rather than the predators they were. It was about the same shock to the Media when the verdict came out.
