Last night I was in the mood for comedy, so the wife and I started Space Force on Netflix.

I was bracing myself for it to be an anti-Trump screed, but it’s not.

It’s actually really funny.

It is a political comedy, but other than a few jokes about POTUS tweeting typos It’s spent more time mocking Schumer, Pelosi, and AOC than Trump.

What it really feels like is more of an anti-bureaucracy comedy than anything else.

It is like a cross between the fantastic HBO comedy movie The Pentagon Wars (which you really should watch) and The Office.

It’s not anti-Space force either.  there is a scene at the end of the third episode – which is a far as I’ve gotten – in which the General played by Steve Carell and his head scientist played by the fantastic John Malkovich testify before Congress and make an honest, heartfelt justification for why Space Force exists.

They also put “the angry young Congresswoman from New York” who only cares about her constituents on food stamps in her place.

Also, the Chinese are very much the enemy.

I’ve really enjoyed it so far.  I was bracing for the worst and have been very pleasantly surprised.

I suspect that part of the reason is that the co-writer is Greg Daniels who was the co-writer for King of the Hill, which is a show that still holds up.

Honestly, give the show a chance.  I recommend it.

Spread the love

  1. Hilariously, my wife told me last night that all of her friends who watched it said it was horrible.

Now I know why they thought it was horrible. They thought it was going to be “Orange Man Bad” and it was “Politician Bad, even yours.”

  2. “I suspect that part of the reason is that the co-writer is Greg Daniels who was the co-writer for King of the Hill”

Okay, King of the Hill was funny and jabbing at politics in its own endearing way. It didn’t grate or get in anyone’s face like some do.

I’ll have to give this a try.

  3. Tried it, couldn’t get past the first half of the first episode. But then, I was a major fan of “The Good Place.” Maybe that says something. But… “ Different strokes for different folks.” Enjoy, regardless.

    1. I loved ‘The Good Place,’ it’s one of my favorite series ever. I just watched the first two episodes of ‘Space Force,’ and although no where near as good as ‘The Good Place’ it was a lot better than I expected…

The comparison to ‘Pentagon Wars’ was apt, although that was more of a satire played as a straight drama… ‘Space Force’ is a lot more of a broad comedy that plays at satire.

I’m giving it a healthy “B–” grade based on the two episodes I’ve seen so far. There’s definitely room for improvement, but the foundation seems solid.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
