From CNN:

Twitter and JPMorgan are removing ‘master,’ ‘slave’ and ‘blacklist’ from their code

The language of computing is changing in the wake of the death of George Floyd.

Twitter is dropping the terms “master,” “slave” and “blacklist” from its code after two engineers lobbied for the use of more inclusive programming language. America’s biggest bank, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), is taking similar steps.

“Words matter,” Michael Montano, the head of Twitter’s engineering team, said in a tweet on Thursday. “We are committed to adopting inclusive language in our code, configuration, documentation and beyond.”

“Master” and “slave” refer to one process in the code that controls another, while “blacklist” describes a list of items that are automatically blocked, such as forbidden IP addresses.

This isn’t limited to tech.  Realtors have been told not to call it a “master bedroom” anymore.

There has been a movement to rename The Masters back to the Augusta Nationals because master can only mean owner of slaves and not someone who has mastered a sport.

Woke Harvard has eliminated the term Master from all academic titles and there has been talk of renaming the degree from Masters Degree to something else more inclusive.

Note how all of this shit is top down, starting with the elite of academia and the tech industry.

There are no master masons demanding their titles be changed.

I just can’t wait until some Professor of Women and Non-Binary Gender Studies has a conniption at the auto shop because the master mechanic says the brake slave cylinders on her Volvo need replacement.

I would love to see that mechanic look the professor right in the eye and say:

“You’re right.  I’ve emancipated your brake slaves.  Be careful going down hill.”

And just leaves it at that.

Spread the love

  1. If “blacklist” is outlawed, what happens to “whitelist”? And does this mean history books won’t be able to talk about McCarthy any longer? I suppose that would make sense, lest anyone notice the similarities with current politics.
I wonder what they are going to do about EE terms like “male” and “female” connectors. Of course, there are some non-binary connectors out there… like the GR874 and 7 mm coax connectors, or the Anderson PowerPole DC connectors. Then again, that last one seems “problematic” anyway given that name. 🙂

  2. Really some stupid stuff going on, just because persons want to erase history by changing something or changing common usage of the English language.
I’m personally offended at the idea of altering long time existing titles, such as Master Mason, which you mentioned. I can proudly say that I served a local Lodge of Masons as Master of the Lodge for two terms during my 41 years of membership.. A cousin of mine once “informed” me that Masons were evil because they refer to the presiding elected officer as Worshipful Master. He felt that was sacrilegious because no one other than Diety should be called by that title. He was of the Baptist faith.

    1. I wasn’t even thinking about the Masons (the organization). I was thinking about bricklayers, apprentice, journeyman, and master.

      1. The history of the Masonic Lodge includes the fact that they were masons of stonework. The progressive levels remain similar, Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason.

      2. Yeah, I can just imagine the feedback from the master plumbers and master electricians when some unemployable weenie tells them their titles are no longer acceptable. As the saying goes, buy popcorn.

  3. Tell me when it hits the U.S. Navy enlisted members, and the rank of “Master Chief” is on the chopping block. I want to see what the good people who earned that designation think.

For that matter, let me know when gamers get word that Microsoft plans to rename the Halo protagonist of the same rank. 😉

  4. Those remote manipulators you see in old movies or old documentaries about nuclear energy are commonly referred to as “Maser-Slave” manipulators or more succinctly as “Slaves” as in “The slave in (hot) cell 3 is broken and needs to be repaired.” And yes they are somewhat fragile and don’t take abuse well.

  5. For a while, I used to do tape duplications, mostly cassettes with speeches to be sold at conferences at the end of the day. I worked with a Mater reproducer linked to 15 slaves recorders.

Does that make me a plantation & slave Owner?

  6. I got a masters degree in computer science as challenge to myself. My workplace hardly recognizes it, and to them it’s just another footnote on my CV.

If these nazi revisionist jackasses want to rename it, they better first pay me the $95,000 (one lump sum in ca$h please) it cost me,
Otherwise, they can kiss the wrinkliest & darkest part of my hairy latin ass. I’ll keep calling it what I want. Couldn’t care less about their pearl clutching bullshit.

  7. For a while there Nurse Practitioners were eligible to sit for their boards, having earned their Master of Science in Nursing.

    Would the alternative, be “Mistress”?

And, what about those of us nurses, who “identify” as men?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

  8. So, what will we call all those masters degrees in hyphenated-American studies now?

  9. Imagine if this fuckwits knew the highest ranks you could attain in the action shooting sports are Master and Grand Master, all for shooting at brown cardboard targets.

I say it in jest, but about a decade ago someone actually wrote in to USPSA and complained that the shoot targets were brown and the no shoots were white.

    People suck.
