When open carrying goes wrong… ??#retention #mrgunsngear #detroit pic.twitter.com/BRR0vPPjqh

If you make the stealing of your sidearm easier than a purse snatching, you are a certified idiot.
“But Muh Rights!”
Criminals like politicians do not give two royal fucks about your rights. Haven’t you noticed that yet?
“You are victim blaming/shaming.”
And you are damn right. That “victim” has not only provided criminals with a free weapon but probably set back Open Carry rights for those states that still do not have it. This video will be used by the Opposition as example why OC should not be legal.
“You are just an Open Carry hater.”
No, I am a Gun Carrying Moron hater. If you can’t figure out that your gun may be snatched and you Open Carry without a good retention holster and a good belt, you are a Gun Carrying Moron.
In case the tweet is removed, here is a copy of the video.

ZERO fan of open carry unless you are on your own property.
Open carry has its place but those places are limited. I prefer concealed. If the need arises, I’d prefer to surprise the other guy.
And then … He chased after the guy who had just stolen his gun.
His presumably loaded and ready to shoot gun. Which he no longer had. Because someone stole it right out of his holster.
Sigh.
He probably carried on an empty chamber, since it’s only a small addition to his pile of stupid.
There are times open carry is appropriate, and I have retention holsters for those times
It seems like the pistol was in his pocket, not a holster. Also, what possessed the thief to look where the pistol was? He couldn’t have seen it from the doorway. Also, the gun in the thief’s hand appears to have an extended magazine, which was not present when the gun was in the owners pocket.
This video clip is not the whole story. Change my mind.
I noticed the “extended magazine” also, and didn’t think it made a lot of sense. Perhaps it’s a candybar the thief had also stolen.
Snickers bar? 8>)
I saw the magically appearing “extended mag” too. my guess is that the thief ejected the mag in the grab, and it’s being held by contraction of the last finger or two that hang off the bottom of that short grip.
My bet? He was cased before hand. And most people never look around when in a line.
That was ridiculously stupid.
Since moving to Alabama, I have become a fan of open carry. I won’t do anything that dumb. It’s nice to be able to put a pistol in a nice OWB strong side holster and not worry that the muzzle is peeking out from under your cover garment. Essentially dressing like I’m at an IDPA match.
I’ve lived in an open-carry state for almost eight years now, and of the dozen or so open carriers I’ve seen, I’ve yet to see anyone carrying in a decently secure holster on a decent belt. The most popular holster style seems to be open-top Kydex, with nylon holsters with cheap thumb-breaks running a close second. And don’t get me started about their lack of situational awareness. HUA (Head Up Ass) seems to be the default mode for open carriers here.
Having said that, I don’t think it should be illegal. Besides preventing bad faith prosecutions for printing or inadvertent displays by displaced cover garments, it has its place, if it’s done right, and in the right environment.
I see maybe 3-4 open carriers per year. Perhaps half of them have a visible retention strap. The others, well, I’m hoping if they’re kydex there’s a retention mechanism.
That said, A lot of the OCs I see are, by appearances, farmers or ranchers in town for a supply run, most of whom don’t appear to be people to be messed with in the first place.
Too many OCers think that A) the gun is a scary deterrent, and B) their situational awareness (assuming they have any) will save them. But not only are criminals not deterred by the sight of a gun, quite a few of them have been shot and they have no fear of it, so the gun is just a theft target. And the OCer’s situational awareness won’t help him if he’s blindsided or swarmed by multiple assailants.
I think it should be legal, but like everything else, you have to know when and when not to do it.
This doesn’t seem like your normal gun owner.
Stupid OC is bad, but normal OC is fine. Literally nothing wrong with it. It’s a right and we are in this together so we should support them all. You gotta have situational awareness of course, but there is nothing wrong with exercising it
Looks like an IWB holster tucked in a pocket. Stupid.
The mindset of the feral in the vid can be summed up as Young Bull, “Let’s run down there and f one of those cows.” My issue with OC leans more to concerns about the criminal with the Old Bull mindset, “Let’s walk down and f them all”. Unless you only own one or two handguns, you can’t carry all your weapons on you. I would wager that most gun owners own more than one. The smart criminal, and there are some out there, follows the open carrier back to his home, does a little recon, and either breaks in when he knows no one is home, or worst case scenario, cons or forces his way in with a few like minded associates when it’s occupied. Now, unlike the feral in the video, the smart criminal possibly gets away with ALL your weapons. Also, re the extended mag, just because he stole a gun, doesn’t mean he didn’t have one already.
@snuffy: “The smart criminal, and there are some out there, follows the open carrier back to his home…
Thankfully, there seem to be very few of them. How often has that actually happened?
