MDA McBrideThis case is…well…. weird as some stuff does not make sense other than the injecting of politics by the usual suspects.

This is what allegedly happened according to Time magazine (Nov. 06, 2013):

Renisha McBride was shot in the back of the head with a shotgun Saturday, the Detroit News reports. McBride was in a car accident at roughly 2:30 a.m. that morning. Her cell phone battery had died, her family said, and she is believed to have gone to a house looking for help, where she was shot and killed.

“He shot her in the head … for what? For knocking on his door,” the woman’s aunt told local TV station Fox 2. “If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911.” She added, “I feel it was racial.”

The race and identity of the shooter, and the specific charges against him, have not been released.

But Detroit Free Press (November 7, 2013) quoting Lt. James Serwatowski, chief detective of Dearborn Heights PD has a slight different version (extracts):

Dearborn Heights police say a homeowner told investigators his shotgun accidentally discharged, hitting Renisha McBride in the face as she stood on his porch….“This girl was not shot in the back of the head while leaving the porch,” Serwatowski said “I don’t know where the family is getting this. She was shot in the front of the face, near the mouth.”….“I’ll confirm that she was in an accident in Detroit and that she left the accident scene, and then some hours transpired” before the shooting, Serwatowski said……Serwatowski said the shooting occurred about 3:40 a.m. and the accident happened at about 1:30 a.m. He declined to say what police believe McBride was doing before and after the accident.

They are not specifying what charges might be brought on the homeowner, but if it looks like he opened the door, then he cannot claim self-defense and if the shooting was not intentional, then I am wildly guessing maybe involuntary manslaughter.

But, of course, the death of a black teen at the hands of a white person immediately brings out the hordes of idiots who hate Stand Your Ground and have no problem adjudicating any shooting to it.

From Salon Magazine (Nov 6, 2013):

Police have now asked that charges be brought against the shooter. But since a “stand your ground” law applies in Michigan, the charges may not stick. As Rania Khalek has rightly pointed out on her blog, “The problem with a law like Stand Your Ground is that it excuses and encourages deadly force against ‘perceived’ threats. In the United States, where implicit and structural racism persists on a vast scale, is it wise to empower people who almost certainly have irrational and racist fears.

Before I would say that the author is a moron who does not understand the difference between Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine (the event happened at the porch of the shooter’s house) but after the bills introduced in the Florida Legislature  trying to kill Stand Your Ground, Castle Doctrine and the Extension of the Castle Doctrine, I am starting to get a bit worried and think this is now a coordinated effort to eliminate Self Defense from our laws.

The playing of the Race card is nothing more than trying to raise an outrage and generate publicity. Each party has its own reasons why and I won’t try to speculate, suffice to say I don’t think it will go far as people are getting tired of it.

And remember: It ain’t paranoia if they really after your right to self-defense.

  1. But, of course, the death of a black teen at the hands of a white person immediately brings out the hordes of idiots

I don’t think anyone has identified the race of the homeowner. Also, and I’m sure this is racist somehow, she was shot about 10 miles from the site of the motor vehicle accident. One can only wonder how she got that far in two hours and why. A brisk walker covers about 4-5 miles per hour, it’s doubtful that she was walking that fast for two hours.

      1. Yeah, I think Dearborn Heights is 81% white, but knock on a door at 3:40 in the am and you have 19% chance of waking a non-white. It would be fun watching the race baiters crawfish if it turns out the home owner wasn’t white. Of course, then he’d be labeled as ‘self described black man’.

        1. They probably wouldn’t mention it at all then… They’d just change it to “black teen killed in white neighborhood” or something.

  2. I think it’s always been about self defense. Just looking at our school policy was enough to convince me.

  3. There’s just a whole lot we don’t know about this case yet. I can’t make a judgement on it at this point, except to say that, yes, it is being politicized to attack the 2A.

  4. Do you think we’ll ever get to a point where playing the race card gets no response? Eventually, people will stop buying into it, if for no other reason than that they’re sick of hearing it.

(Forgive my straw-man argument, but…) We’ll know it’s jumped the shark when a color-blind black man claims the sky is green, not blue, and Al Sharpton sues Crayola to relabel their products, because not doing so is racial discrimination.

(And why is the black crayon wrapped in a white paper, anyway? That’s just another representation of the white culture keeping the black community confined! Crayola should be ashamed!!!! 😉 )

    1. Do you think we’ll ever get to a point where playing the race card gets no response?

We are getting there but depends on the area. When I moved to Miami over a decade ago, I saw the use of the Race card on its way out as people figured out that corrupt politicians (the first ones that pulled that joker out of the pack) came in all the colors of the crayola box. We recalled Miami Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez in 2011 with an 88% result on an initiative that was started by a Romanian-Polish Jewish billionaire (Norman Braman) in a county that is 60% or more Hispanic.

  5. This woman’s family and the local public are screaming for justice and the arrest of the shooter. What amazes me is that where I live (west of Detroit) we have had three black males killed at parties thrown in apartment complexes in as many months. Not ONE person has come forward to help the police apprehend the shooters in each case. Not one out of all the people that were present at the parties and those that live in the apartment complexes. In another case earlier this year, one individual that was set to testify against a couple of thugs from Detroit was shot up as he sat in his car, parked in his drive way. Again, no outrage, cries for justice or two fucks given.

    1. Blacks won’t even admit that there’s racism from within their OWN social group. Dark skinned blacks hate light skinned blacks (I over generalize to make the point) because they’re not black enough.

What I find disappointingly interesting is that I’ve not yet heard anyone in the media eye make the point that when a black person kills a white person, that you almost *never* hear the white side claiming racism.

The only time I see the race card coming out is when a black person is killed by a white/other. It’s a shame, but until these race baiters are gone and people learn to be responsible for their own actions, I think we’re stuck with it… 🙁

  6. Who knows what happened? But honestly if someone woke me up that late banging on my door I’m investigating the noise with a gun in my hand. Also she was not shot in the back of her head, the police says she was under mouth.

    1. If it was a negligent discharge then I’d expect an involuntary manslaughter charge. But again, as you said, we in the blogisphere don’t know the whole story.
