A few days ago, a man tried strangling a woman at MIA bus stop with a shoelace and he was charged with attempted murder. Thankfully, a bystander intervened and the man took off | #ONLYinDADE pic.twitter.com/HGlqVloZdR

I will give more props to the young lady. Although her situational awareness sucked (Guy got too close) she fought back and she kept on fighting till a positive outcome happened.
And this is a good example for the need of less lethal options in your EDC. I approve the second man’s initiative to help but going hands-on is always an iffy situation. I believe that several bursts of OC accompanied by lots of screaming are a nice alternative to getting too close and in contact with crazy,
Any recommendations for an OC that causes lotta screaming & twitching from a perp?
Been considering adding to my EDC a less lethal option that don’t include spicy sprays or gels.
I’m pretty sure that in FL the bystander was justified in using lethal force. Anyone trying to strangle a woman with a shoelace is in the act of attempted murder.
Certainly in NH that is true. And by definition in any other civilized state. I suppose less-than-lethal is desirable if necessary for the safety of innocent bystanders, but apart from that, the appropriate response to attempted murder is deadly force.
Legally yes. But in a high-tension event with moving target and non-target so close? For the victim, Pepper spray goes away faster than a bullet wound.
In Texas, bystanders could have legally taken turns killing the cretin.
The things you see, when you don’t have a gun….
This isn’t for everyone, but a less than lethal option is learning some combatives. Its not something fast you can go buy and put on your belt, and of course you have to have some physical ability, but it’s always with you if you train.
I’ll have my blackbelt in Hapkido this year at age 49. It will be 3.5 years when I finish. Taking some Filipino martial arts as well. Again not very fast to acquire the skillset, but I wanted some additional options in my toolbox before I deploy the gun.
You can find places that will teach basic self defense which will be a very focused, limited set of techniques. Start there, and if you take to it, there are a sea of options.
IANAL, and am certainly *NOT* any sort of ninja, but I wonder if a 3 in folder into the assailants neck might distract him from his assault?
Yeah, I guess the second guy helped but he sure didn’t help himself by pussyfooting his way in and talking to the guy. Get in there and choke that motherfucker out. You know, speed, surprise, violence of action. Not take your time, announce your presence, and flit to and fro. If you’ve made the decision to interact physically, get in there!
