MOBILE, Ala. — Seeking to honor a retired congresswoman and 2011 shooting victim in the most considerate and respectful way possible, the Navy today christened the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10), a first-of-its-kind, gun-free warship.Designed to hold a core crew of 40 sailors, the Independence-class littoral combat ship has been stripped bare of its Mk 110 57-millimeter gun, all four of its Mk2 .50-cal machine guns, its Evolved SeaRAM 11 cell missile launcher, and its entire cache of small arms, which are typically issued to boarding teams and watch standers.“Having this mighty warship be 100% gun-free not only helps to honor its heroic namesake, Gabby Giffords, but it also helps the Navy to steer clear of promoting a culture of violence,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, who reportedly lobbied hard to get Congress and the Secretary of Defense on board with leaving the Navy’s newest addition to the fleet completely defenseless.

  1. There are some days when The Duffle Blog and The Onion are like the National Enquirer – the best source of actual truth about the strange stuff going on.

I’m sure that if Ms. Giffords could speak for herself she’d say Duffle Bog’s version is closer to what she is told is her opinion.

    stay safe.

  2. “Gun free”??? How in the aitch ee double toothpicks is it supposed to be a warship, then???

    Wait, was I just trolled?

  3. Blogs like The Duffle Blog and The Onion give the proggies too many ideas. Couldn’t you see the new, LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ sissified Navy doing this? I could, possibly on a hospital ship.

  4. There is truth in parody. Unless it’s an aircraft carrier, it just doesn’t look like a warship unless it is bristling with guns. This all stealthy, fully digital warship may have been designed by the best, but it still just looks like some millionaire’s high speed yacht before painting.

To credit the old battleships, there have been analysis done that say by adding the guidance and ESIP technology to the old 16 inch guns that is in use by the army in the 155mm filed guns, the 16 inch gun could deliver a 2000 lbs war head on target with the same accuracy and nearly the same range as the Tomahawk missile for a few thousand bucks a shot as opposed to $16 million per missile. If you went to a nuclear powered battle ship, using the NAVY’s electromagnetic gun, you could beat the Tomahawk in range for even cheaper.

Ballistic missiles were great 20 years ago when computers were still pretty big. Now that you can pack a GPS guidance system and steering capabilities into a 155mm artillery warhead. Ballistic missiles are obsolete – they are very expenisve, take up a lot of space, and require launch tubes.
