I saw this video over Tom Given’s Facebook page and it is an amazing lesson to absorb.

I am going to quote him because he makes all the sense in the world:

I’m not going to debate whether this was a justifiable shooting or not—that is not the point. I want you to see the effect (or lack of it) of 12 pistol shots to the upper torso from a step away. This is why follow through is so important, along with an expectation that more than one shot will be required. This is not uncommon with subjects under the influence of DDDA (Drunk/Drugged/Deranged/All of the Above).

And no, your .45 ACP does not shoot tactical nukes that would have brought the subject down just by clearing the holster.

  1. You could probably squeeze an Americium round design into a .45, in which case it certainly would – literally – be shooting tactical nukes.

But then, I wouldn’t want to use it at close range. Certainly not this close. Or, you know, probably, carry it at all… Always setting off smoke detectors would be annoying. 🙂

  2. As I said on the forum: We carry handguns because they are compact and not because they are powerful.

After seeing the autopsy pictures of petite 50-60kg female active shooter who got hit seventeen times by expanding 9mm rounds before going down (and who killed her victims with a .22) I go for maximum capacity in my pistol.

What good are 8 rounds of all american .45 when the attacker does not give a fuck?

    1. Which is one reason Mrs B likes her FNX-45, and why I changed my carry pistol from an XDs to a P365XL.

Quantity has a quality all its own.

  3. Remember the Battle of Barrington- Baby Face Nelson took a couple of .45acp slugs & buckshot, but was still able to kill and loot a couple of FBI agents before he finally dropped dead.

  4. “Why does anybody need more than 10 rounds in their gun except to kill a lot of people really quickly?”

Ummm… maybe to stop one very irate meth head.

And that’s not an isolated case. There are a ton of recorded instances of suspects absorbing shot after shot after shot and still going strong. One cop wrote about why he started carrying 135 rounds of 9mm on duty: IIRC, he got into a shootout with a drunk and high suspect, who took over a dozen hits — including 3 head shots — to stop, and still survived long enough to bleed out in the hospital. The cop was carrying a .45 and had only two or three shots left, which IMHO is way too close to running dry.

Any politician claiming we need to limit magazine capacity needs to be sent this.

  5. I remember reading of a case (early 80s, era of PCP) where a bad guy got out of the car shooting and was shot back twice in the heart by the cop. The bad guy dropped his pistol, ran to the back of his car, opened the trunk and started to remove a shotgun when the brain finally flipped the switch. The autopsy revealed that the heart had been destroyed by the bullets, and still the guy would not go down immediately like in the movies.

  6. This could have gone differently had it been another LE agency. The Montgomery County sheriff’s department doesn’t do much. Primarilly court security and evictions. Which would explain the poor physical condition of the deputy and the oitcome of using the pistol/lethal force to stop/subdue the threat.

Also the person recording/commentating during the video is a piece of work.
