         In an incident that occurred on August 25, 2023, at a home on Quarry Hollow Road in Friendsville, 68-year-old Jeffrey Scott West died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and 24-year-old Kyle W. Spitze sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his right ear.

         The Blount County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident began with an argument between West and Spitze inside the home. During the argument, West pulled out a gun and shot at Spitze, grazing his ear. Spitze and another person then ran outside and called 911.

         Despite efforts by the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations and SWAT teams to negotiate, West was later found dead in the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound​
