A state lawmaker wants to outlaw use of guns on residential properties except in cases of self-defense.

State Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, whose district includes parts of Manatee and Sarasota counties, filed a bill Thursday to ban discharging a firearm in Florida on any zoned residential property, which would include large-acreage ranches and farms, except on properties exclusively approved for hunting or in cases where “a person is lawfully defending life or property or performing official duties.”

And as a stupid bills go, it does not matter if your residence has a couple of thousand acres of land smack in the middle of nowhere land, you are still verboten to pop some rounds.

So far, no backers on this bill. But we just need another jackass opening a rifle range from his second story bedroom to the Koi pond to make this thing happening.

  1. Fudge this guy. One of the items on my bucket list is to own a home on a big enough plot of land to have a range on. I am very much not alone in this.

A friend of mine in college, her dad had a range we used to shoot on that was on the edge of the family farm that was too rocky and hilly to plant corn on. It went out to 300 yds. He had berms at 50, 100, 200, 300 yds, a thrower for skeet, and a 25 yd pistol range with steel poppers and a length of clothes line stretched across on pulleys to use for moving targets. I want that.

I get not being allowed to shoot in my mom’s back yard in the Gables. But if have a couple of hundred acres out by Homestead or Indiantown, its none of you business if I want a range outside my back door.

  2. Dumbazz in suburbia notwithstanding, I am a lot surprised there was not already a law against discharging firearms, what, ten yards from others’ homes.

Though I do not forgive the draconian response.

  3. Wow. You guys got snookered by the smoothest poker bluff I’ve seen in a while. First, the guy never fired a single shot. Second, he publicized the heck out of his crap backstop and what he intended to do. And the guy who owned the range folded and rewarded this guy’s huge cojones with a yearlong free range pass. As a bonus, his backstop is on Ebay for sale! This guy turned himself from a schlub into a local celebrity in the span of a week.

AND HE NEVER FIRED A SHOT!
