Once again, stealing stuff from Greg Ellifritz:

“I’ll Just Hold Him for the Police”

I hear this statement with some regularity from some of my students and the folks who comment on the articles I post.  Have you ever actually tried to hold someone on the ground when they don’t want to be held?  It’s not as easy as you may assume.
I was reminded of this fact when I was watching one of the videos on the Active Self Protection YouTube channel.  Watch the embedded video below.  The two guys disarmed their attacker and are attempting to hold him for police.  Despite the fact that the defenders were using strikes, they still had a rough time keeping him on the ground.

As usual, go read the article and pay attention to the videos. They are very revealing.

I had made the decision long ago that I am not keeping anybody. Legally can get iffy, (specially if the veteran liar decides to weave a story of being on his way to bible school and being assaulted and kidnaped by the crazy guy with a gun) to the fact I was never a hand to hand specialist when I was fit, and much less now. Since my ultimate goal is my safety and the safety of mine, distance is my friend and if the bad guy decides to give me that, I will take it.

IANAL Warning: If the bad guy runs away, the police may say it shows Consciousness of Guilt and that may help your side of the story. Obviously that means you need to call the police and fill a report. He who calls 911 first is the victim and gets the upper hand.

And once again I revert to the wise words of the late Jim Cirillo:

”You are not sworn to endanger your life to apprehend a dangerous criminal, nor you are paid to do it.

  1. I agree with Jim. My philosophy, ever since I started carrying has been; “it’s not my job to take prisoners.”

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
