In Arabic, Inshallah means “Allah wills it.”

This idea of people being submissive to the will of Allah has lead to a dangerous fatalism in Islam.

I’ve seen it where Islamic workers don’t bother wearing PPE because if it’s Allah’s plan for them to lose their toes in an accident, who are they to question it.

Back in November of last year, I wrote a post about this phenomenon causing ammunition depots in Islamic countries to explode.

Again, I will quote the great text “Why Arabs Lose Wars.

Indifference to Safety:
In terms of safety measures, there is a general laxness, a seeming carelessness and indifference to training accidents, many of which could have been prevented by minimal efforts. To the (perhaps overly) safety-conscious Americans, Arab societies appear indifferent to casualties and show a seemingly lackadaisical approach to training safety.

So it is no shock to me what I read on CNN.

Ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse linked to catastrophic Beirut explosion

A warehouse storing thousands of tons of unsecured highly explosive material has emerged as a possible source of the massive blast that ripped through the Lebanese capital on Tuesday, killing at least 100 people, injuring 4,000 and sending a shock wave across the city that damaged buildings and blew out windows up to 10 kilometers (6 miles) away.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, which is typically used as an agricultural fertilizer, had been stored for six years at a port warehouse without safety measures, “endangering the safety of citizens,” according to a statement.

Initial reports in state media blamed the blast on a major fire at a firecrackers warehouse near the port, that likely spread to nearby buildings. However, the Prime Minister’s account appeared to be backed by Lebanon’s General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim, who said a “highly explosive material” had been confiscated years earlier and stored in the warehouse, just minutes’ walk from Beirut’s shopping and nightlife districts.

A Muslim country improperly storing over 3,000 tons of explosives for six years in a warehouse adjacent to a shopping district?

Inshallah.

  1. Hhhhhmmm. Funny. I posted a comment in the video post Miguel posted that this would be blamed on AN. in my limited knowledge of bangy stuff this did not look like AN. I do fireworks shows and the small flashed to me didnt look like cooking off fireworks. Maybe paranoid but theres more to this than fireworks snd fertilizers…. too bad for the masses just tryin to live

  2. I’ve heard stories from a couple guys who went ‘over there’ that training Iraqis in preventative maintenance was something of a challenge, because of that weird wired-in fatalism.

As I have said elsewhere, that sort of lackadaisical attitude must make the life of an armor crewman or fighter jock VERY exciting.

  3. Might have been ammonium nitrate, but probably not fertilizer. Most ammonium nitrate fertilizers don’t have enough concentration to be ‘spoldey without other things added. Combustible yes, ‘splodey not so much. The stuff used to make bombs and shells on the other hand is really scary if not properly handled. Why confiscate the stuff if it was “just” fertilizer?

  4. Rudyard Kipling said it best back in 1907,

An explosives expert said the blast was roughly equivalent to 240 Tons of TNT. That means most of the 2700 tons of Ammonium Nitrate did not detonate, it burned and provided that huge red cloud.

The start of the video in the previous post shows the warehouse where the AN was stored. Thankfully the first big explosion he witnessed drove the videographer off the roof and under cover before the huge city destroying explosion occurred. That saved his life, or at least his camera phone.

  5. It reminds me of a story I was once told by a Marine. I’m not sure how much of it is true but the gist of the story was I told is that terrorists do not aim their guns. They just point in the general direction And once that bullet leaves the barrel it’s “allah wills it” Whether or not that bullet will hit someone.

To be honest I’m not actually sure if that’s true or just propaganda. But I wouldn’t be surprised. I also don’t think it’s just Middle Eastern thing either. There was an Indian family that lived down the street from me a few years ago which I still keep occasional contact with. They have a similar attitude on preventative maintenance. I have a few stories of when I visited their home.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
