Bryan Untiedt was 13 when the school bus he was riding with 20 school mates stalled in a Colorado spring blizzard on 25 March 1931. In a grim 33 hour fight for survival in the snow covered bus, Untiedt organized the other children, keeping them awake – the older ones moving and the smaller ones huddled together, while trying to maintain a fire inside the bus.
Having given his warm outer garments to smaller children, Untiedt himself nearly succumbed to the cold, as did five children, one his younger brother, and the bus driver.
After rescue strenuous medical efforts efforts saved his life. He was later recognized as a hero and in a subsequent visit to the White House was presented with a .22 caliber rifle by President Herbert Hoover.
