Michelle Goldberg is a columnist with the New York Times and a contributor for MSNBC, so you have some idea what her politics are.

She Tweeted this:

The Left has always wanted to delegitimize self-defense.

If you are able to defend yourself, you are not reliant on big brother government to rush in and protect you.

That is why every clear cut case of self-defense they portray as “vigilante justice” or as the defending parts being “judge, jury, and executioner.”

They want to make the idea of self-defense unpalatable for honest citizens.

The problem is, that self-reliance hasn’t been entirely bred out of Americans just yet and the defunding of police and political stand-down has only made Americans more widely believe in that principle again.  The record spike in gun sales proves that.

  1. Foster shot at the car? I hadn’t seen that. The reports I saw up to now just speak of him carrying his rifle as he approached the car, pointing it at the car (possibly by accident) — which the driver saw as a threat and responded to. That’s all fine in my book. But if he actually shot at the car, the case is even more thoroughly cut & dried.

  2. This case, if indeed it didn’t involve shuts from Foster, sure serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of open carry.
If you carry concealed, you have an effective means of self defense but you’re not going to be seen as a threat. But if you open carry, you have to be constantly on guard not to look like a threat. That’s especially true if you’re walking towards someone, and particularly if you OC a rifle in a way that allows the muzzle to move around.
OC doesn’t make your self defense options any better than they are with CC. If anything, slightly worse (your weapon is in the open where someone might try to take it away, rather than under your clothes where it’s harder to snatch).
If indeed Foster was the victim of being perceived as a threat when he didn’t intend to be, his decision to OC was a big part of that. If he had carried concealed he might well be still alive.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
