A follow-up to a previous post.

According to Moore, bomb squad technicians estimated they were placing about 16 pounds of explosive material in the containment truck, which was capable of handling a blast of up to 24 pounds. But the actual amount of explosive weight placed in the vehicle appears to have exceeded 42 pounds.

“We have miscalculations that are significant,” Moore said.

No shit.

What happens when you put 2.6 times the amount of explosives you thought, and 1.75 times the amount of explosives rated for, in a bomb chamber?

  1. If you read the article, what you said isn’t really true. The “weight” of the explosive isn’t what it weighs on a scale, but its equivalent in TNT. So a 10-pound black powder bomb has a “weight” of, say, 5 pounds, but a 10-pound plutonium bomb has a “weight” of a few thousand tons. The bomb techs on the scene had to estimate the “explosive weight” of the devices, which were homemade, so they had to guess what was in them and estimate its “explosive weight,” and they underestimated. It was a costly error, to be sure, but it wasn’t caused by an inability to count.

    1. No; rather, if I had to guess it would be the inability to do math in one’s head, and/or the inability to accurately remember conversion factors.

Plus, the concept of “independent estimates by different people” would appear to be missing, or subject to the same issues.

    2. The fundamental error was a delusion of competence.

When dealing with homemade explosives, a competent person will estimate for maximal pessimism. And furthermore, a sane bomb squad does not set off bombs in densely populated neighborhoods no matter what they think the safety margin is. Not even if it’s a lower class neighborhood.

And no matter what, you don’t set off bombs with people, especially civilians, nearby.

It is truly astounding how many career ending screwups were committed by these people. The only question left is whether any of them will actually see their career end. Given that we’re dealing with a Democrat-run city, the answer is “probably not”.

  2. “We blew the shit out of that over-priced motherfucker just the way we blow the shit out of *all* high prices, down here at New Deal Used Cars.”

  3. Preliminary investigation reveals explosive material detonated inside LAPD bomb squad containment truck exceeded vehicle’s capacity, authorities say.

    Captain Obvious for the win.
