I’ve also seen other reasons for aiming low: one is that (if using iron sights) your peripheral vision shows the hands and upper torso of the opponent. Another is that aiming low is hard on the nerves of your average male.
Also if you hit in front of your target (low), still a chance of a ricochet or fragments coming up and hitting.
We called it shoot em in the junkular but this has a certain ring to it.
