ABSURD: ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous.

Connecticut will be demanding registration of all “High” capacity magazines from its gun owning citizens under the new gun control bill. At face value this looks like an absurd bill and impossible to enforce, but that is not what it was created for.

Legislators know that there is no effective registration of something without a serial number, but they know that they will have no problem placing the onus of demonstrating ownership prior enactment on the owner of the magazine. If you are stopped by a LEO, it will be up to you to prove the mags you carry were legally grandfathered and still they can pretty much ignore you, arrest you and place you in custody. The Grandfathering of Magazines is nothing more than an affirmative defense which does not save you from a court proceeding, it only helps you to be found not guilty.

Now think about if for a second. You have a couple of empty PMags in your range bag, you get stopped by Police for a faulty license plate light. The Officer after running your tag, finding our you have no warrants and nothing overtly suspicious is afoot, asks you if he could check your vehicle. Outstanding citizen you are, you say yes and the cop finds the mags….you are toast. You are arrested for violation of the Connecticut Hysterical Gun Control Law of 2013, taken to the pokey where you use your one phone call to get a lawyer, you will have to post bail meaning taking on a loan of mortgage, go to court and hopefully be let go when the prosecution cannot prove you obtained those mags post the enactment of the law. You are set free but you lost money, time and reputation fighting these charges for measly $180 worth of molded plastic. You have now become an example for other gun owners to get rid of their magazines or at least hide them well enough not to be found by a cursory check. Every single person arrested by this Malum Prohibitum becomes an example not to exercise their rights. These “absurd” laws are designed to be excessive pour l’encouragement des autres (to encourage others) to heed the dictum of their “betters” by hook or crook. It is one of the nastiest forms of Social Engineering and will do nothing to solve the possibility of a future Sandy Hook, but then again that was never the intention of the legislators as Gun Control was never about the guns but about control.

Because as sure as hell, Connecticut’s actual & tough gun control laws did not stop Adam Lanza, did they?

Keep an eye on your local legislators. Start beating them now with plenty of communications. Let the know that even the thought of a passing idea about restrictions will have consequences at the polls. This is still a two-front war and our only saving grace is that there are many more of us than then.

So far it is unclear where did the kids get the gun, but for this particular post let us assume it was inside the vehicle.

I don’t have kids but one thing as sure as God made little green apples is that kids will find something they are not supposed to find when you are not looking. If you have a gun, it is your responsibility to make sure it is not easy to be retrieved by unauthorized parties when you are not in control of it.

It is no longer enough to lock the gun inside the car. The kid can get to the remote when you are not looking and opening the vehicle to go play inside. We have now designed cars as children playgrounds with DVD players, games, etc, so it is not unexpected that little kids want to go inside if other options are not available or they are just bored. Leaving the gun under the seat, in the glove compartment or the center console are not the most smart of options, specially if you keep the DVDs or controllers there.

So, what should you do. Amazingly the most obvious is the one most ignored: keep the gun with you at all times. That means if you do not have a concealed weapons permit, get one! A gun securely stashed in the holster stashed in your hip will go nowhere unless you let it. Purses, fanny packs and other off-body methods only work if they are being worn, not hanging from the back of a chair or relegated to a top of a dresser.

If for any reason (logical) you cannot carry, get a car safe. The requirements are simple: It has to lock, it cannot be opened easily, it is a sturdy box and it is not easy to remove from the car. There are scores of small car safes in the market catering to every budget so there is no excuse for you not to get one.

This is the simplest & cheapest type of gun safe for car available in the market. Made out of steel and comes with a cable that allows it to secure it to the base of a car seat or any other hard point inside the vehicle. You can find it just about anywhere in the interwebs for under $30. That is cheap insurance to avoid a fatality.

Get your damned gun secured, would ya?

Organizers of the Rocky Mountain Western States Regional IDPA Championship, initially scheduled to take place July 4-6 in Montrose, Colorado, have announced that the match is being canceled in the wake of Colorado’s recently passed gun control laws.

“With these new Colorado laws going into effect July 1, and based on the ambiguous way in which they were written, we have decided to cancel the Rocky Mountain Western States Regional IDPA Championship,” said event organizer Walt Proulx of Grand Junction.
