ONE of Scotland’s leading doctors has called for a ban on “killer” kitchen knives.
Dr John Crichton, the new chairman of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland, wants the sale of pointed kitchen knives to be banned to help reduce the number of fatal stabbings.
He first suggested the move three years ago, but his proposal did not win enough support from policy-makers. Since then dozens of people, including schoolchildren, have lost their lives as a result of attacks involving bladed instruments.
Dr Crichton, who took on the role of chairman in June this year, is championing a switch to so-called “R”-bladed knives, which have rounded points and are far less effective as weapons.
He said that research shows many attacks, particularly in households where there has been a history of violence, involve kitchen knives because they are so easily accessible.
Dr Crichton believes a switch from sharp-pointed, long-bladed knives to the new design could save lives.
“Top doctor: Ban deadly blades from our kitchens”
England has become a caricature. That hacks like Crichton are even given lines in a publication confirms that.
Bladed instruments without a point? The first thing that popped to my mind was the murder of Lee Rigby who was chopped to death with a cleaver back in 2013. And we know it was a cleaver because video was taken of murderer while holding the weapon.

Dr. Crichton makes two dumb assumptions, 1) round knives will guarantee a reduction in the number of wounds by forcing everybody to switch to rounded point knifes: it simply won’t, but you will get is an increased number of throat slashes that will be even deadlier and 2) You have not prohibited grinders which can be used to create a point in the blunt knife.
And the question remains: What are you going to do with the millions of pointed knives already in circulation? Just because you can make them illegal does not mean the tips will magically fall off.
Madness and stupidity mixed in equal parts. Shaken, not stirred.
PS: It just occurred to me: you really do not need a sharp point to stab somebody in the eye and drive the blade all the way inside the brain.
Hat Tip Robb A.
