The local fecal aviary catcher reprints a WaPo article and you just know they agree with it.
Whether this is even politically intelligent is unclear. Setting a clearer standard on disinformation would invite a torrent of criticism, but now that these companies have removed Infowars, they are due for a reckoning someday. They might as well dislodge themselves from their collective crouch and start running offense.
It would mean recognizing the enormous amount of control they have over the online ecosystem, as well as detailing how they plan to exercise that influence. It means determining a robust framework for removing disinformation (beyond what comes from Russian trolls), and articulating what that framework looks like. It probably also means staffing up to make sure that plan operates well in practice, and perhaps even creating appeals processes for those dissatisfied with the companies’ decisions.
My first comment is: Does this mean pretty disinformation will be allowed?
What strikes me as funny is that the author firmly believes the Big Social Media companies have total control which is nothing more than forgetting history: Newspapers are no longer the pillars of information, TV is slowly dying with cable coming right behind them. American On Line, once the ruler of the internet and the connections among people is nothing but a Dad joke anymore.
Every time content has been tried to be controlled, humans find a way to bypass it. The Soviets were an incredible repression machine and yet they could not stop Samizdat, what makes these idiots think that in Free Market USA somebody will not come along with something new and better to make their plans obsolete?
And in the meantime, people are bypassing the restrictions of those platforms and thumbing their noses at the overseers. I can’t post the link to CodeIsFreeSpeech.com in Facebook? Good luck chasing a meme:
Can they eventually come up with an alogarithm that can detect this me and delete it? Yes, but it will cost time and money while memes are cheap.
Americans will find a way to flip the middle finger and bankrupt you in due time. We don’t have Railroad Barons anymore, do we?
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Democratic lawmakers have failed to force the Republican-controlled Legislature to repeal the state’s contentious “stand your ground law.”
Democrats asked Secretary of State Ken Detzner to poll legislators on whether they would support holding a special session to amend or repeal the law. The law allows people to use deadly force without retreating if they believe they are in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.
The move required three-fifths of House and Senate members to vote yes.
The vote isn’t officially over, but results released Thursday showed Democrats falling short in the Florida House. Forty-nine House members have voted against the special session request, while 39 voted yes. The Senate currently is tied 14-14.
The episode opens talking about the history of Sanford, Florida, being a white town taking over a black town and being a hotbed of Klan activity. This very well may be true, I don’t know much about Sanford, but it holds no bearing on the shooting of Trayvon Martin. When Jackie Robinson came to Sanford, it may have made a difference. Now Sanford is affordable housing for Disney employees. All this was supposed to do was prejudice the viewer.
This episode covered the petition and protests leading up to the arrest of George Zimmerman. The petition was mentioned repeatedly, including the number of people that signed it.
The petition was one of the worst parts of the whole Trayvon Martin ordeal. Our Constitution explicitly says “No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed” in Article I, Section 9, Clause 3. A petition for the arrest of a US Citizen gets very close to a being a bill of attainder, especially in a Democracy. It undermined one of the most important Constitutional principles that we have.
From there the episode covered the introduction of Al Sharpton into the media circus.
Allow me to send a message to Black America:
Everything Al Sharpton does is poisonous. He instantly makes anything he gets involved in lose credibility among white people. He was responsible for the only two Pogroms in American history, the Crown Heights Riots and the Massacre at Freddy’s Shopping Mart. Then there was the mendacious dumpster fire of the Tawana Brawley case against the NYPD. That should have made him persona non grata for life in the media, but like a recurrent tumor he keeps coming back to do damage. He’s a hustler and a con man and if you want us to talk any grievance you have seriously, keep Al Sharpton the hell away from it.
Sharpton turned the Trayvon Martin shooting into… is there something bigger than a three ring circus? Like if you could imagine a three ring circus in which the show was a a bunch of elephants running in circles with Howdahs that are burning dumpsters, that’s an appropriate metaphor.
He took Trayvon’s mother and father on a nation wide cry fest to gin up protests and riots in Trayvon’s name. “No justice, no peace” is the antithesis of justice. “Convict the person or we riot” is a lynching by a third party.
Then it covered the Obama “if Trayvon had a son” comment by Obama. Immediately the accusation was racism by white people who didn’t like Obama and that is what polarized the nation on the shooting. Not the idea that Obama may have just prejudiced the entire nation and jury pool.
The documentary went into the political fallout of city and state officials that were forced to step down before the appointment of Angela Corey as Special Prosecutor. Immediately, Corey was criticized as someone “not sympathetic to black people.”
The evidence of this was that she prosecuted a lot of homicides. Really. The show covered her prosecution of a 12 year old black boy as an adult and how bad that made her look. The show never got into the story of Christian Fernandez, and how he confessed to beating his two-year-old brother to death by slamming his head against the corner of a book shelf because he was mad at his step dad. Sure, Fernandez was an abused child, but that abuse turned him into a psychopath, it shouldn’t be a mediating factor.
Once Zimmerman was arrested, the show covered how the right worked to turn Trayvon into the perpetrator by revealing facts about him like his drug convictions and so forth. They were the bad guys. That had to be made clear.
This was because Zimmerman was “a hero to the right.” No he wasn’t. It wasn’t Zimmerman vs. Trayvon. It was media spin vs. the truth. Nothing about this case was objective from the beginning. Trayvon’s parents and those who used them used the media to drive an agenda and when another agenda was driven back at them, they cried victim.
The show closed with how the white supremacist National Socialist Movement came to Sanford, then the show tried to tie the NSM to Conservatives. Anybody who didn’t buy that Trayvon was a totally innocent child executed by a racist for buying Skittles and wearing a hoodie is a Klansman.
The takeaway from episode two is Paramount Network is Black Pravda. There is no truth, but I will keep watching.
There is an old Spanish saying “Cria cuervos y te sacaran los ojos.” Raise ravens and they will pluck your eyes out.
The City of Portland has long given Antifa the latitude to pretty much what they want because they are supposed to be fellow politicos of the Left. But predator cannot be controlled and they will eventually demand their pound of flesh extracted from your backside simply because they are bold enough to do so.
This is your cute little monster, have fun chasing it down and bringing it under control.
Berkeley and San Francisco seem to be in competition for which city can be the most insanely Leftist city in the country. Seattle and Portland are in the running for third and fourth.
Not to be out done by Berkeley’s letting an Antifa thug off for cracking a skull, Portland let Antifa siege their city hall.
Starting at 39 seconds in, a guard is trying to close the door to keep the city council safe from the protesters, and he gets into a tug of war with the door with a masked Antifa thug.
Where are the police? That punk with the bandanna around his face trying to keep the door open should have be separated from the door handle with a truncheon. It’s hard to tug on a door handle with a compound fracture of the radius and ulna.
Another punk took a swing at a guard with a bullhorn injuring a guard.
One demonstrator, who was masked and wearing a baseball helmet, smashed a security guard over the head repeatedly with a megaphone. The guard was seen afterward clutching a bag of ice, a bruise beginning to form on his cheek.
City Hall security chief Dorothy Elmore said she was also struck by a protester, in the arm.
This attack on the Portland city hall was in response to police not letting Antifa beat Patriot Prayer to death arrest at an earlier protest.
The demonstration started on a less rowdy note. A few dozen protesters converged near City Hall’s east portico beginning around 9:30 a.m. to rail against police brutality after riot cops injured multiple people at Saturday’s downtown protests.
Among them were those who say they were physically harmed by officers as police attempted to clear the rally against the right-wing group Patriot Prayer.
Thugs get arrested for violence on Saturday. They respond by attacking the city government. The word that comes to mind here is: insurrectionists.
They can’t help themselves but claim victim status no matter what happens.
“I should be home recovering from the pain and trauma I’m suffering. But I’m also suffering from complete outrage and powerlessness,” said Michelle Fawcett, who lives in Portland.
Apparently she didn’t suffer enough pain and trauma on Saturday that it didn’t dissuade her from trying it again at city hall. That is key.
Fawcett, 52, sustained third-degree chemical burns after she was struck by a flash-bang grenade fired by police at counter-demonstrators. The non-lethal munition is meant to deliver a jarring blast of noise and light that can disperse crowds of people.
Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw on Monday said the bureau had temporarily suspended the use of the flash-bang projectiles, which she and other department officials refer to as aerial distraction devices, until it can be determined if they are working properly.
Protester gets hurt by less-than-lethal that was thrown at her because she was part of a violent mob and Portland has to scale back their use of force.
That’s only going to encourage more violent protests.
Leo Lacroix said he was injured when a non-lethal projectile fired by police grazed his head. He showed a reporter photos of his bloodied forehead and a scab from the small wound.
“I’d like to know why I was shot in the head by the cops,” said Lacroix, 28.
He was probably hit in the head by accident, but that he’s complaining about a boo-boo shows you just how much of a bunch of cry-bullies these people are.
As tensions rose, security blocked dozens of demonstrators as they tried enter City Hall near the Happy Cup Coffee kiosk. Some carried placards showing images of the bloody wounds and gashes caused by crowd-control munitions fired by Portland police over the weekend.
“Come down Wheeler!” the crowd chanted between verbal barbs and invective hurled at security as well several police officers who appeared in the atrium.
“It’s our f—— building,” one demonstrator screamed.
But police threatened the protesters with arrest if they did not leave the building immediately. Another protester grabbed a glass sugar urn from the coffee stand and smashed it on the floor.
A wall of security personnel then began to move against the demonstrators, slowly forcing them out the front doors.
Several security guards tangled with activists, including the guard who was bashed on the head, while the crowd shouted “Shame on you!”
Lacroix, the protester injured Saturday, had hoped to address the City Council about his injury. He was unable to because the mayor and commissioners were meeting behind closed doors.
“I think they’re cowards,” Lacroix said. “I think this is really sad.”
That last part is true. The city council and police in Portland are cowards. Next time Antifa shows up with murder in their heart, it’s time for police to wade into the crowd and give these over sized children a lifetime worth of missed spankings with night stick.
These thugs will keep ramping up the violence until they get a taste of something they can’t handle. Right now the lesson they are learning is that they can riot and threaten lives and then whine about boo-boos and scratches and the police will tone it down. It’s only inviting worse in the future.
