Month: December 2018

Audio and Visual memory. Not necessarily a straight path.

Earlier tonight, the wife and I were watching some Trivia channels in YouTube and one in particular, they played an intro song and you had 15 seconds to identify the show. We were doing the 50s and failing miserably when one song came on and I immediately recognized it. Now mind you, I was not alive in the 1950s nor started to watch TV in English till I initially moved in the 80s, but my brain identified the song in a roundabout way.

Who’s the leader of the club
That’s made for you and me
M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E
Hey! there, Hi! there, Ho! there
You’re as welcome as can be

Before the song got to the spelling part, I was shouting The Mickey Mouse Club!!!!!! And the image that came to my mind at the same time?

I told my wife how I came about with the answer. She shook her head and gave me that look that usually means “My mother was right when she warned me about you.

OK, so I am not right in the head. sue me.

No Duty to Protect lawsuits. Is there another way to skin a cat?

I know there is a lot of anger at the real possibility that no LEO will get punished for the Parkland shooting due to NDTP. But, how about suing BSO for failing to maintain proper training standards in regards of Active Shooters? Maybe not a lawsuit but a petition to remove the upper echelon of BSO including the heads of the training cadre to the Governor’s via referendum?

In fact, the position of Sheriff in Broward county is elected and recalls are allowed in the State of Florida. Of course, we need to clean the Elections Board first. If we leave Brenda Snipes and her minions, Sheriff Scott Israel rather than being recalled, ends up as new Senator for Florida.

So much for Trump 2020 – Update

Trump 2020 is now dead.

Trump killed it.

Trump Administration Bans Bump Stocks, Says They’re Equal to Machine Guns

Saying bump stocks are similar to machine guns, the Trump administration is banning the firearm accessory that came to national attention last October after a man in Las Vegas unleashed murderous gunfire on concertgoers.

The new regulation requires bump stock owners to turn them in to federal law enforcement or destroy them within 90 days after the ban is published in the Federal Register.

“The Department of Justice is amending the regulations of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to clarify that bump-stock-type devices-meaning ‘bump fire’ stocks, slide-fire devices, and devices with certain similar characteristics-are ‘machine guns’,” the order reads. “Current possessors of these devices will be required to destroy the devices or abandon them at an ATF office prior to the effective date of the rule.”

No national concealed carry reciprocity.

No Hearing Protection act or other removal of suppressors from the NFA.

If you have a novelty item that is useless for doing anything but turning money into noise, you have to destroy it to go to prison.

With the Democrats taking the majority in 2019, the chance of any pro-gun bills being passed under Trump before reelection is Zero.

Congrats Trump, you just alienated half your pro-gun base with 12 days left of a Republican majority in both houses of Congress to buy you any pro-gun good will to make up for this disaster.

If you lose reelection in 2020, you will have no one to blame but yourself.

Update

Less anybody questions my assertion, since this is an ATF ruling, here is a Tweet direct from Trump earlier this year on his Twitter account taking full credit for pushing his this and blaming Obama for allowing bump stocks.

Even if this is just an ATF ruling, Trump has made it clear that his fingerprints are all over it.

I don’t think he realizes that doing this will not make a single Democrat look on him more favorably by one iota, what it will do is piss off every pro-gun Republican immeasurably.

Update No. 2

For those of you who might be inclined to say “but J.Kb., Trump is President, he doesn’t make laws, how can you blame him for a lack of CCW Reciprocity or the failure of the Hearing Protection Act?”

You are technically right, the legislature creates laws.

HOWEVER… in the US, the President has traditionally be able to use the weight of the office to encourage the Legislature, especially the members who are in the President’s party, to work towards a goal.

The term we use for the power the President has to move the Legislature is political capital.

The ACA is Obamacare because Obama spearheaded the act, went on tour to sell it to the American people, and rallied the Democrats to write the bill and pass it unilaterally.

Trump spent no political capital on CCW Reciprocity or the Hearing Protection Act.  He could have thrown his weight behind existing bills.  He could have mentioned it to great applause at his rallies, showing Republicans in the House and Senate that if they supported the bills, they would benefit at election time.

So although Trump has no Constitutional authority to pass either pro gun bill, his silence on them was deafening.

On guns in cars

I have been reading through the comments on Miguel’s post Memphis PD Director wants guns in cars banned.

I was going to comment, then I decided to make it into a post.

If you talk to any security expert, they will tell you that ALL security systems can be defeated.  All it takes is time and energy.

When designing security system, you (or the user in general) needs to balance a number of factors.

  • How much are you willing to spend on security?
  • How much is the value of what you are securing?
  • how much inconvenience are you willing to put up with to access your items?
  • What types of threats are you going to be dealing with?

For most of us, the biggest threat to our guns (besides fire) is a basic home robbery.  A thief with an angle grinder and a couple of cutting wheels can take the front off a safe, even a good one, given enough time.

The key is, don’t give the burglar enough time.

A safe combined with an alarm system is better.  A heavy duty safe is better still.

Most of my guns are in a heavy duty safe, but that is inconveinint in the middle of the night, so my bump in the night gun is in a biometic pistol safe in the bedroom.  It’s really only to keep the kids away from the gun.  I expect any thief to try and attack that pistol box rather than my Fort Knox safes before the cops come and respond to the alarm.

The one gun I have in the pistol box is the one I am willing to lose.

So how does this relate to cars?

I can’t carry in my workplace so I have a gun that lives in my car.  I have it in a small lock box.

The threat that my car is most likely to face, since it has an alarm system, is a simple smash and grab.  Somebody busts a window and takes what they can see.  Any lock box with a cable that can handle a pair of dikes or some hard yanking is enough to deter a smash and grabber.

If he steals my car, he’ll have a lot more time to work on my pistol box.

If you are like me, and the kind of person who isn’t going to be parked in a bad part of town for a long time, that should be enough for you.

Most car breakins only last a few seconds.

If you have a gun made of metal, a bike lock through the trigger guard (or open the cylinder and through the frame) to the frame of a seat is enough to stop someone who smashes a window from walking away with your gun.  Pop the mag and run a small security cable through the mag well and slide and padlock that to the seat frame, if you have plastic fantastic.

A box only stops you from dealing with the inconvenience of unloading your gun before locking it.

If you are worried about someone with a tool trying to pry open your gun box or cutting through it, ask yourself “why does a thief have the time to do that?”

Do you not have a car alarm?  Could you have spent a little more for secure parking and instead parked in the cheap lot?

I’d suspect that for the majority of car gun thefts, the situation is a gun in a glove box or under a seat and the theif broke a window, opened the door, and took whatever he could find within the first 20-30 seconds of the alarm blaring.

If every gun owner can secure their gun enough to stop that, that’s maybe 9 of 10 gun thefts.

Most thieves are criminals of opportunity.  You’re not dealing with Ocean’s 11 here, you are most likely dealing with a junkie who just wants something to sell.

What is wrong with CNN and, to a lesser extent, the military in one short video

I know this is a few days old but I just saw it.

This is a video from CNN.

Two CNN hosts get their panties in a knot over the fact that General Austin “Scott” Miller was carrying an M4 in Afghanistan.

Back in October, CNN reported that General Miller was at a base in Kabul that came under attack and Miller was forced to draw his sidearm to prepare  to defend himself.

General Miller is a graduate of the United States Military Academy.  He is a commissioned infantry officer, twice awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Ranger.  He is the former commander of the Joint Special Operations Command.

If there is a flag officer that I trust to carry and know how to use an M4, is a combat infantry veteran and Ranger.

If said flag officer wants to carry an M4 a combat zone to defend himself, good.

Compare that video to this one from CNN, with a General the CNN approves of.

That is Lt. General Mark Hertling, showing terrible weapon control.

General Hertling graduated from West Point hand has since earned  a Masters of Science in Physical Education from Indiana University, a Masters of Military Arts and Sciences from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a Masters of National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College in Washington, D.C.  His last held command was Initial Military Training.

Not be too much of an armchair commander, but on the one hand we have a general who is CIB (2nd award), Ranger, and JSOC carrying an M4.

On the other we have a general who has spend a substantial portion of his career in classrooms and doing administrative work, who looks like a n00b with an AR-15.

Guess which one CNN has problems with and which one CNN hires as an expert?

It really shows you what CNN things of guns and the military when the idea of a general carrying a selective fire rifle offends them but a general saying semi-auto rifles are too dangerous for civilians is praiseworthy.

It also says a lot about the military that we would put a general in charge of training that can’t shoot a rifle.

Remember that once upon a time, we sent generals into combat who designed their own sabers and carried ivory handle revolvers.

That’s just embarrassing.

The Red threat from the Great White North

Clara Sorrenti is a real person, not a parody account.  She is a Communist from Ontario, Canada.

She has a habit of Tweeting morally repugnant shit like this:

Mass murder and torture are worth celebrating in the name of bread lines.

Then she sent out out a Tweet that sent Antifa into an ecstatic tizzy.

Stalin was responsible for the Holodomor, the deliberate starvation of upwards of seven million Ukrainians.

Stalin had some nine million Soviet citizens executed, worked to death in Gulags, or starved to death in resettlement.

Stalin engaged in ethnic cleansing of Russian minorities, including the extermination of Russian Jews, Cossacks, the indigenous people of Siberia such as the Yakut, as well religious Christians and class groups like Kulaks.

The idea idea that Stalin saved any ethnic group from extermination is beyond horseshit.  The only difference between Stalin and Hitler in his treatment of the ethnic minorities was the the Soviets lacked the systematic, mechanized apparatus of genocide that was a hallmark of the Nazis and German efficiency.  The Russians didn’t need gas chambers and crematoria, they just worked millions of people to death building a highway system, mixing the bodies in with the aggregate.

This Tweet and its popularity with some on the far Left reveals a fundamental aspect of Antifa that we have discussed before but has been ignored by the media.

They want total domination.  All will eventually be subject to them if the have their way.

Who cares if our guy killed 15-20 million people, we’re not even going to bring that up, as long as our guy gets credit for defeating the Nazis.

Take this to America.

Who cares how many American lives we ruin as long as we defeat the “fascists” on the Right.

What we’ve seen so many on the Left say is “if you’re not a Right Wing Fascist, you have nothing to fear.”

Of course you do, you may not be a “Right Wing Fascist,” but that won’t stop you from being fodder for their machine of oppression.

A number of people challenged this girl to put her Communist money were her mouth is, by going to Venezuela.  She took the Communist approach to that challenge.

You have to pay for her Venezuelan vacation.

But sending her there will not teach her anything.  She will not feel for the starving people down there any more than she would feel for the millions of Kulaks that were murdered.  They are just chaff in the way of achieving Communist utopia.

The only donation this girl – and anyone that believes what she does – deserves is $0.29 worth of copper jacketed lead.

Memphis PD Director wants guns in cars banned.

Via @Tactical_review

With more than 1200 guns stolen from cars this year, as opposed to less than 600 just a few years ago, Rallings doesn’t think he has much of a choice but to ask.

Memphis Police Director Asks Legislators To Make Guns In Cars Illegal

And this is why I want to make 2019 the year we secure our guns in our cars.  If the numbers the Director gives are correct, Memphis has a very big problem with cars being broken into for an average of 3 guns a day being stolen. Not all cars have guns in them, heck I figure they are a minority so we probably have a crime being pretty much ignored by the cops. It is Memphis anyway and it is a crime-infested locale going back decades.

But, the issue at the end is one of personal responsibility.  We simply cannot become a supplier of firearms for criminals just because we were too lazy or too cheap to invest in a simple metal box with a lock to secure our gun inside a car.  We are also providing Gun Control with political ammunition to come after us and curtail our rights.
