PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Public School students walked out of class Wednesday to protest school resource officers, or SROs.
Students from a half-dozen Portland Public Schools planned to walk out of class at 9 a.m. to make their voices heard. About a dozen and a half students showed up for the protest. One student read a statement to the crowd.

After the report about the abject failures in Broward county that led to the Parkland High School shooting, this has to be kids demanding protection, right?
Wrong. This is Portland.
“We as PPS students are extremely disappointed in the school board’s actions and believe that police do not have a place in our schools.”
Lucas said SROs make students feel unsafe, contribute to discrimination in school and their presence can lead to hostile and unsafe school environments.
“Stationing police officers in schools will further contribute to an environment of fear and distrust,” Lucas said.
Please, please, please. Grant their wishes. School must be a place of education and they need to start learning what the real world can do to them.
I have no idea how Portland got like this, I imagine started as some sort of West Coast dare:

Umm, teachers have Second Amendment Rights too! If I where a teacher, I’d be hopping mad that the powers-that-be where treating law-biding public servants as being little better than convicted felons.
Our Second Amendment is self-mitigating (when not infringed)! The very same suspects, who champion the denial of enumerated constitutional rights by educators, gleefully flaunt the resulting carnage to push an agenda of complete infringement on the Second Amendment.
In Oregon, people with CHLs — including teachers — are legally allowed to carry on any public school campus (private schools are private and can make their own rules).
It’s a violation of the school boards’ policies and their terms of employment (read: they’ll be fired if caught, no questions asked, and don’t expect the union to defend them), but it’s 100% legal.
Please don’t make Portland worse than it is. What we really need is a volcanic eruption and another summer of forest fire smoke to drive off the Californians and roll back the crazy to late 90s levels.
On the putting armed police in schools topic, I have my doubts about the value of placing “street warriors” in schools because the number of incidents involving misconduct by SROs including sexual molestation and felony assault far outnumber the incidents where an SRO stopped an attack on a school. In my opinion teachers and staff with guns are far more likely to defend their school, and far less likely to do detrimental things than police. This is especially true in high school where an authoritarian personality with a problem solving tool kit of yell, hit, shoot is confronted with a building full of rebellious teenagers, leading to the SRO in Alabama pepper spraying a distraught girl because she wouldn’t stop crying when the officer yelled “stop crying”. Since this same officer would likely pull a Scott Peterson when confronted by an armed attacker, the students are better off without him.

Agree, but do you think the nutjobs would warm up to that idea rather than the SROs?
Since we’re dealing with the sort of people who consider a defensive gun use worse than being murdered or raped, you are unfortunately right. At least they aren’t demanding that the SROs be only armed with hockey pucks and mini-bats.
I’m still trying to figure out how the Left went so anti-cop.
In less than 10 years they went from “police are the only ones good enough to have guns” to “just having a cop near makes us feel unsafe and discriminated against.”
Progtards have always been been anti-cop, but were a tad more subtle about it.

Minor correction: They’ve always been anti-cop, but at the same time they NEED cops to enforce the crazy laws they make and control the proles. It makes for an awkward and uncomfortable alliance, but an alliance it is.
It’s my opinion that the lack of a police exemption in the NY “SAFE” Act and the recent NJ magazine ban were not accidents or oversights. The Leftist pols really don’t want their pet police to have those accessories any more then they want the citizens to have them.
But the police noticed and called them on it, so they had to change it or risk losing police (union) support.
