Once on scene, deputies found a 54-year old male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The residents inside the home told investigators the man kicked in the front door, and once inside, he armed himself with a knife, yelling he was there to harm his children’s mother. He went room to room searching and threatening the occupants who had retreated to a bedroom in the rear of the house. He then confronted a woman in the rear bedroom, who, fearing for her life, shot the man twice.

At the time of the incident, the suspect had an active domestic violence injunction filed on him. He was also reportedly on his way to anger management treatment when the incident took place.

Intruder shot, killed after kicking in door, charging occupant with a knife

So many lessons from this incident.

First: A gun levelled the paying field, in fact, it gave the much needed tactical superiority to win. Nothing calms an aggressor faster than a bullet lodged inside his brain.

Second: Injunctions, restraining orders and the such are really only valid to have on record you are afraid for your life because of the potential of violence from somebody. They do not stop a determined attacker. But that does not mean you should not get one if you need to.

Third: Surveillance cameras also do not stop a violent crime, but they can give advanced warning to you and evidence to the police of what happened. This guy just did not push a weak door open, but kicked the crap out of a solidly installed door over and over till it finally gave up. This was not a case of “oops! I did not mean to.” but of an enraged savage lusting for blood. I doubt the woman of the house will have to fear from an overzealous prosecutor since the evidence is plainly in her favor.

  1. Fortunately she lived in a state where she could own a firearm.

Also the subtle bias in the lede, “…why the woman who pulled the trigger is not being charged.” And of course it’s being investigated as a “stand your ground case.”

  2. Thank goodness this happened in a state with a reasonable set of laws.

A similar situation happened in MD before I left. A woman was at her boyfriend’s apartment. They were planning on getting married.

Ex-boy friend comes over and starts banging on the door, demanding to be let in as he wanted to confront the female. Current boyfriend arms him. Cops are called. “We’re afraid for our lives, he’s violent, she has a restraining order. I’m armed.”

They are on the second floor. 911 orders (yes, orders) them to retreat to the bedroom, close the inner door and barricade it.

They do so. Ex breaks down the front door and starts in on the inner, weaker, bedroom door. Pretty soon he’s got that door down and is making his way into the bedroom.

Current boy friend is yelling he’s got a gun. Yelling for the ex to leave. Yelling that the cops are on their way. Current and woman are now backed to the rear wall of the apartment.

Ex enters the room and current fires, killing the ex.

Cops arrive, arrest current boy friend.

Current is/was in prison for murder. Under Maryland law, the woman and current had a duty to retreat. Since they were “only” on the second floor, they should have climbed out the window and dropped to the ground to get away.

  3. Wait a second here.

Aren’t knife fights just part of growing up? Dammit, I need Lebron to clear this up for me!

If anyone who tweeted hateful stuff about that cop that saved those two girls from being slashed/stabbed/killed says this woman is a hero… Oh, who am I kidding. They are probably already celebrating her independence and strength in defending her family.

  4. If he had only attended one more Anger Management Class, he might still be alive today!

The Front Door slowed him down and allowed the woman to find her gun. That is a good thing.

  5. As usual, the media talking head wouldn’t know a stand your ground case if it bit him in the ass.

“Stand your Ground pertains to the duty to retreat before using deadly force in self defense. According to the news reader, the victims in this case DID retreat and were barricaded into a bedroom, from which they presumably had no further retreat, so even if Florida wasn’t a stand your ground state, deadly force still would have been justified.

This could be considered a “Castle Doctrine” case, wherein when someone is unlawfully forcing their way into an occupied dwelling, that act itself is presumed to infer a reasonable fear of imminent death or great bodily harm, but even that doesn’t really apply because the perpetrator in this case was reportedly armed with a knife, eliminating any need to presume a deadly threat existed.

Good shoot and it had nothing to do with stand your ground.

This is a pure self defense case.

  6. Shannon Watts would rather all those women and children be stabbed to death than the one be armed to save all of them.

    1. “Gun control is the assertion that a woman raped and strangled in an alley is somehow morally superior to one who shoots her attacker stone dead.”

  7. But, but, but, she had a restraining order. Why didn’t she call a therapist to de-escalate. She could have shot I’m in the leg. It was only a knife. 8>)

  8. Speaking of restraining orders: “The Constitution is a restraining order against the federal government. I’m not going to say a word about the effectiveness of restraining orders against criminals.” — Standing Wolf
