Cowardly Police and Militia Search Negroe’s Homes, Disarm Them, and Then Turn Them Over to the Blood-thirsty Demons Clamoring
For Their Lives. Without Arms or Protection 38 are Killed, More than 200 Wounded and 325 Negro Homes are Burned and Looted.

THE SHAME OF ILLINOIS
Brutality Unparalelled in the East St. Louis, Illinois, Riots
Militia a Joke.
The most horrible, blood curdling and wanton massacre of un armed and defenseless Negroes ever recorded in this country’. (Land of the Free and, Home of the Brave) occurred last Monday at East St. Louis, ILL., where 38
Negro men, women and children, two of whom were less than three years of age, were foully murdered, more than 325 homes belonging to or occupied by them being burned and a reign of terror instituted.

(Kansas City Sun. Volume IX. Number 45. Kansas City Missouri, Saturday, July 17, 1917.)

Nothing I say can add to the story. If you do not learn, it is your head.

  1. Shameful and disgusting!

Ironically, this is July 1917, not many weeks after Woodrow Wilson convinced congress to declare war on Germany. Many young men were signing up to kill Germans, instead of their own citizens.

“The thin veneer of civilization” indeed.

  2. Certainly the roots of gun control in this country are racist. More generally, gun control is classist (is that a word?). Those in power, or with money (redundant?) will always be able to obtain weapons or hire armed goons as body guards. They want arms for the rest of us to be too expensive to obtain, and impossible to carry. For a recent example, see the proposals of New Jersey’s governor.

    1. Clayton Cramer wrote a good article “The racist roots of gun control”.
As for “classist”, yes, that’s pretty obvious when you look in places like NYC, where the rich and famous have no problem getting gun permits. People who don’t want “hoi polloi” to have guns, like the publisher of the NYT.

  3. The section above reads:
One big Pole last night said he had lost his job in an aluminum factory, his wife and two daughters had lost their places and and his son had been shot by a Negro. “I killed seventeen last night,” he said, grinning as he shifted an ax he was carrying from one hand to the other. “And I am going to get a few more if I get a chance.”

The Sun is referring to the paper, The Kansas City Sun. I’m assuming that the Pole is referring to a Polish man.

  4. Hmmm… I was born and reared in East St. Louis many decades ago. I’ve never heard this story. I guess it just wasn’t part of the history that they wanted us to know.
