Somehow I doubt the second part will remain true for long. Those who ignore the past…..
UPDATE: They have 6,595 comments in 2 hours’ worth. As much as I read all were pretty much the same: You are idiots and goodbye. Have a nice bankruptcy.
UPDATE 2: CTD is getting massacred in Twitter. And if that wasn’t all, they raised the price of the PMags from $15 to $60 in 48 hours.
UPDATE 3: Facebook account suspended by them. Now they claim they are supporters of the Second Amendment. They managed to generate 11,900 replies and probably none positive and lost over 4,000 likes since I last checked.
Well just sent them an email that I’d no longer shop there, and to remove me from their mailing list
I would say not to jump to any conclusions about their plans. They may just be restructuring to minimize risk to the merchandising line (backpacks and stuff), tomorrow coming out with a new entity called CTD Guns LLC or something like that, and/or adding a lengthy disclaimer to any purchase (like Dick’s, which makes you fill out a couple forms besides the ATF form).
As to pricing, it could be their supplier is sticking it to them, so they have no choice…they may have no inventory but instead a supplier who drop ships, and maybe no fixed price agreement.
No I do not own any stock in CTD. I am just saying that many consumers don’t realize how complex the firearms business is, all the legalities and layers of the supply chain.
So let’s wait and see with CTD. Dick’s on the other hand, pulling ARs off the shelf does seem a little spineless, although they may feel it’s an appropriate “tactical retreat”.
I think they caved. They could have said “we are in the process of moving to the new site…blah…blah.” But they did a sharp announcement and have not clarified it for over 2 hours.
I surprised that CDT would be that stupid. Have they had a management change recently? Maybe brought in some people that weren’t around the gun industry for the Zumbo/S&W/HS Precision events?

I keep refreshing their FB page watching the “likes” drop by the hundreds every couple minutes. Rather entertaining, since they hit my “buh-bye” list damn quick…
Oh, and it wasn’t supplier’s doing the gouging on them… They’re sold out of the 30 rounders, but if you hurry you might be able to get the 20 round PMAG’s still from Brownell’s.
Well, their pricing isn’t exactly “cheaper than dirt”, but it wasn’t all that bad. I’ll wait and see how badly they dig their hole before I totally give up on them. In the meantime, though….my money will go elsewhere.
It was a total bonehead move on their part. Dick’s will survive because they cater to several sports. But CTD?
CTD is reliably one of the more expensive ammunition suppliers I’ve found. Wal-Mart is usually cheaper, and if you can get on a first-name basis with some of the people at gun shows, even Wal-Mart feels extravagant.
I stopped doing business with those dirty bastards in 2008, when they had a box of .380ACP listed for $75. They can die screaming in a fire for all I care.
They used to have good ammo prices a long time ago. I bought my first 1K case of 7.62×39 for $90, free shipping. But they went stupid and I was finding it cheaper almost everywhere else.
Huh. Guess I’m never GOING to buy from Cheaper Than Dirt. Their name always seemed like a misnomer to me. I haven’t found a single deal on their site but couldn’t get a better one without waiting for shipping.
My Gunshop guy’s comment on Pmags was that it appeared that huge orders (of Pmags) were being placed by some other gunshop commandos, rders in the thousands, in an effort to corner the market. The response was to limit the size of orders to correspond with shops with known traffic/distribution.
COTD drop-ships most of its orders and has a low inventory threshold (thus their price structure being not-so-good), so they got caught it the rising cost-wave.
In their defense (and I don’t buy anything from them anyhow), the COTD internet-guy who was at the GunbloggerRendezvous a few years ago was a genuinely swell gun-guy but beset by a company that was in cost-containment mode AFAIRecall and they probably saved similar money on servers and other business infrastructure…
Just tossed the latest CTD catalog in the trash. They’ve seen the last of me.

I have had a bad experience with CTD. I ordered ammo, it was out of stock, they charged my card, kept my money for more than 30 days so I had to pay my credit card, cancelled my order, posted the same ammo at a higher price, refunded my money. Yes the have great prices, no they aren’t always good people.
