I keep seeing this FAKE ad and I am getting a wee bit tired that some in our camp will actually believe the Bradys would be stupid enough to come up with stuff like that.
Brady Rape FakeWhoever was the creator of this idiocy needs to shut down whatever version of photoshop he has and play Candy Crush or Farmville.

But what really ticked me off yesterday was somebody who actually defended it saying it accurately portrayed what the Bradys want. After trying to explain why this ad is more hurtful to us than the opposition, the gentleman still refused to budge. Right there I came up with the term Uranium People: Dangerously irradiating and too frigging dense to change or even understand what they do is hurtful to our cause.

It is THEIR side the one that has to resort to lies and misdirection to achieve their goals. It is their side the ones that makes outlandish accusations about our lifestyle. It is the artistic community on their side that create bigoted versions of what we look like, how we dress and how we behave… and that is find and dandy with me because lies is the best ammunition we have to shut them down.

We must remember that we are not trying to convince the Opposition that their ways are wrong; they are too mentally entrenched to change and they will rather die or we die than admit they are wrong. Our real target are those who have not made a final decision or may not even be aware of the fight for they can be recruited.

We are fighting without the benefit of an extensive media or even big coffers where we can dip and counter their propaganda on even terms. What we have  is the Truth and the stats to prove it plus the relentless determination of millions of activists, the true grassroots. But all that can be destroyed in a 2 minute TV mention of a fake ad by the evil Gun Nuts who disrespected not only a poor man condemned in a wheelchair but raped women everywhere. And only if we lose 10 people to their side, those are 10 people who would have come to OUR side but instead we let them walk because some silly bullshit by somebody with more time in the computer than actual functioning brain cells.

As I told the gentleman about his assertion that the ad was “fake but accurate.”

If I recall, Dan Rather said something along those lines. I also recall it did not do any good to his credibility and it achieved the opposite of what he was looking for.

Unintended consequences are a bitch. Don’t be Uranium, please?

  1. On the one hand… yeah, the ad does accurately portray what the anti-gun crowd wants.

On the other hand, if you resort to lies to get your message out, is your message really worth hearing?(I have objected to several Christian tracting strategies on these grounds)

  2. Isn’t that the one that might actually be real (might even still be fake)? Snopes calls it a fake based solely on the word of the brady campaign. To debunk such things, don’t they normally track down the original source, or at least a source that predates the ‘supposed’ first use? They did none of that here.

    1. Although I didn’t do any sort of systematic search, Snopes tended to go until they found an answer they liked– or, to be generous, that made sense to them– and then stop. Remember that sign that they “debunked” where some reporters went and interviewed the guy who’d put it up, and they never did correct the page? (Sorry I can’t remember more.)

  3. Normally, I would agree wholeheartedly with you on this. Normally.
And, let me also add that I find this particular “ad” abhorrent, and could not support it in any way.

But, let’s all remember who we are dealing with here. A group that has no qualms whatsoever about distorting the truth, and they assume everyone else does exactly the same thing. In fact, I think one of the reasons the antis are so impossible to get through to is because they assume any information you present is fabricated, distorted, or misrepresented, because that is EXACTLY what they do.

in 2012, Romney ran a clean campaign (relatively), and strove to keep to the facts, keep it all above board, etc… and his opposition had no reservations about outright lies, distortions, etc… They even went so far as creating an ad where old women were threatening to cock-punch Romney if he won. Had the Romney campaign been a just a little less honorable, we might very well have not see a second Obama term.

    1. I am very partial to mock the Opposition and I have been known to play parody with an ad to make a point (https://gunfreezone.net/index.php/2011/12/24/michael-douglas-brady/).
But this one does not make a differentiation and that is dangerous.
Play with them all you want, just don not “put words on their mouths” as they create enough stupidity on their own.

“I just want to say that, actually statistics are not on your side even if you had had a gun. You said that you were a martial arts student, I mean person, experienced in tae kwan do, and yet because this individual was so large, he was able to overcome you, even with your skills[*]. And, chances are that if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you….”

Mocking works, remember the Light a Candle thing by Brady and how effectively was countered by the counter movement initiated by Weer?
      http://www.weerdworld.com/2012/your-first-reminder/ and https://gunfreezone.net/index.php/2012/01/08/i-lit-my-candle-for/

We can counter attack without resorting to lies. We can play “nasty” but we can do it with class as to show that our enemies are just a bunch of bloody power hungry idiots.

  4. […] … before the truth can even get its pants on. I have mixed feelings about the parody ad copy someone is circulating and is being taken as real Brady Campaign copy. I won’t help to spread it or promote it by showing it here, but I’ll probably surprise some people by saying under the right circumstances, something similar to this could be an extremely effective tactic. Maybe because it was obvious to me when I first saw it that it was parody, I actually don’t think such a tactic is necessarily damaging to the cause. […]

  5. A lot of these are getting started on /k/ the weapons board of 4chan. That certainly some of the lighter stuff from that infamous place.

  6. If the Brady campaign will publicly state that they do not object to women being able to arm themselves against rape, I will concede that the ad does not accurately represent their position.

    Sure, I’ll wait . . . .

The truth remains the truth, even if expressed as parody.

    1. But correct me if I am wrong Andrew: at first look does the ad look like a parody or like a real ad?
People looking at the ad the first time assume it is real and that is where I have the problem.

  7. You want scary?

I shared this on my facebook page… and had relatives, female ones, arguing in SUPPORT OF WHAT IT SAID.

Female relatives. Arguing that it’s worse to kill a rapist than to be raped. Adults with kids.

    Blew my mind.

I’ve also seen it posted in earnest….
