Screw you Microsoft

I was watching some YouTube last last night, and in honor of International Women’s Day, Microsoft blasted me with this ad.

What.  The.  Fuck.  Microsoft?

First of all, not until you get to Microsoft’s website do you get the fine print.

Only 6.7% of women graduate with STEM degrees vs 17% of men, meaning men are 2.5 times more likely to enter these high paying fields.

Watching the video, it looked to me like they were trying to imply that 93.3% of STEM degrees went to men.

I tried to double check their statistics and found this article from the US News and World report.

Overall, 40 percent of bachelor’s degrees earned by men and 29 percent earned by women are now in STEM fields.

That’s a little different from the Microsoft claim.  Isn’t it?

Then you go into the breakdown of STEM fields by gender and you find out that while 18% of computer science majors are women, so are 60% of biology majors.  So in the video, that girl that wants to cure cancer has good chance of being one of the women who make up the  57% of STEM degrees earned in biological or life sciences.

That bit is true.  Why?  Because they are girls?  No.

Because modern science is collaborative.   Research teams include hundreds and sometimes thousands of people.  You can dedicate your life to a project and sometimes only make a tiny dent in solving the problem.  The vast majority of engineers and scientists won’t ever become a Nobel Laureate or a famous inventor, regardless of gender.

Welcome to the world of engineering.

It is hard.  That is why so many students who start in an engineering degree fail to finish it.  It is academically rigorous.  While all your friends are out partying on a Wednesday and cutting that 8:00 am class, you are writing lab reports or doing differential calculus.  Being an engineering major sucks.  I know, I did it for 11 years.

But ultimately, what I want to know is, who is telling these girls that they can’t major in STEM.

That is what pisses me off the most.  I began my STEM career in 2001 and have seen nothing but program after program and initiative after initiative to bring girls into STEM.  Where are the people saying “science isn’t for the girlies?”  Everything I’ve seen is 100% the opposite.  I’m tired of hearing how discriminatory STEM is.  All Microsoft managed to do with this ad was beat me over the head with the same crap I’ve heard in eleven years in academia, somehow as a man who likes science, it’s my fault that there aren’t as many women in the field “as there should be.”

Wal Mart Shoppers

Congressman Jason Chaffetz is in hot water on social media because he had the audacity to suggest people need to prioritize their spending on necessities over luxuries

Good god, what a monster.

He should have listened to Michelle Obama when she blamed the obesity epidemic of the poor on “food deserts” where grocery stores don’t want to invest in low income high crime neighborhoods.

I lived in a poor area of South Dakota and watched the poor buy Doritos, snack cakes, Mountain Dew, microwave meals, etc., with EBT.

I on the other hand, spent my money on milk, eggs, bananas, apples, chicken breast, etc.  At the same Wal Mart.  I found buying ingredients and cooking  them was cheaper.  A big bag oh Fuji apples cost less than the big bag of Doritos.  A pound of chicken, jar of sauce, and box of pasta was $8 and lasted four days.  But it was my money I was spending so I had to be mindful of my purchases.

I thought that the poor who bought junk food bought junk food for the same reason they were poor.  Bad decision making skills, putting short term pleasure over long term benefits.

Silly, conservative me didn’t know it was because the poor are victims of capitalism… or something.

I guess what we really need is both socialized health care AND allow people to use government benefits to buy iPhones.  Heck, the Apple Store should accept EBT or else it’s racist.

Poor people shouldn’t suffer the negative effects of their own decisions.   Thinking otherwise shows your privilege.

This worked out well for the housing market in 2012, didn’t it?

Burn the witch!

I caught this Twitter exchange between Bette Midler and Shannon Watts on Twitchy.

Ah yes, when TWO organizations that fight for civil liberties team up and fight for the rights of people to retain their Constitutionally protected rights from being taken away without due process, they are wrong, because guns.

This exchange really shows just how ideologically fixated these people are.  There is no room at all for understanding, the ACLU engaged in heresy and must be punished.

The fact that the NRA and ACLU didn’t just arm a bunch of crazy people never crosses their mind.  A disability advocate explained in Vox why, despite being anti-gun, why he supported this action.

Having someone on Social Security Disability who wants help managing their finances is not indicative in any way of being potentially violent.  All the Obama rule did was stigmatize people and deny them their rights.

Funny thing is, this isn’t the first time in recent history that the ACLU and NRA buddied up to take on an Obama usurpation.  The ACLU and NRA were on the same side regarding just how bad an idea “No fly, No buy” was because it restricts rights without due process.

See a theme here?  You shouldn’t be able to lose a civil right without a judgement against you.  Checking a box on a Social Security form and setting up a designated payee is not an adjudication of mental illness.  Having some bureaucrat put your name on a watch list is not a conviction of criminal activity.  You shouldn’t lose your rights for either reason.

But in Bette Midler’s and Shannon Watts’ world, anybody that sides with the NRA is in the wrong.

Maybe, if Hillary runs for mayor of NYC, the NRA should endorse her and make a big show of donating to her campaign.  Maybe the congestive dissonance of that will get Shannon Watts to stroke out.

On the Travel Ban

Slate published a stupid piece about how if the US was really concerned about stopping violence it would ban white men.  Why?  Because stupid Progressivism, that’s why.

Tucker Carlson debated Mark Hetfield, a refugee advocate, about the Trump Travel Ban 2.0.  Hetfield’s argument was, there hasn’t been a history of terrorism from the six nations named in the travel ban so it is discriminatory.

I know I’m a nobody from Flyover country, but here is what I see, and why I support the travel ban 100% and think it should be expanded.

ISIS has been successful in hiding its fighters among refugees going to Europe.  ISIS admits this with pride.

Terrorism, terrorism, terrorism, whatever.

When I read about what is going on in Syria, every single day I read about ISIS chopping the heads off Christians.  In fact, there have been so many public beheading in Syria, Google can’t keep track of them all.    Don’t forget, a couple of years ago two Muslims beheaded a British soldier in England on video.

Is it too much to ask that people who come from a culture in which beheadings in the  streets is normal NOT be relocated to the US?

These people butcher other Muslims like animals and make videos about it (Warning).  I don’t want them here.

I don’t think it makes me a bigot to want to keep the head choppers and throat slitters as far away from me a possible.

Not to mention, the argument that the “Muslim ban is a gift to ISIS” is the worst think I’ve ever heard.  “If you don’t let us in to your country, we will kill you” isn’t a refugee policy, it is a hostage tactic.  That line of thought should be an automatic disqualifier.

I don’t think this makes me a terrible person.  Just an American that wants to see America stay beheading free.

End Game

One Sci-Fi movie franchise I never got into was Resident Evil.  Naturally I should be into it, I like zombie movies and grew up with the video game.  I is just the plot of the movies made no sense to me.  Why would a company engineer an extinction level zombie virus and release it?  What is the purpose of destroying the world?

  1. Make T-virus and release it..
  2. Turn the world into zombies.
  3. Profit?

What is the point of being the wealthiest CEO on the planet if there are no mechanics left to fix your Lamborghini, Five Star restaurants left to make you steak, or pool boys left to clean your pool and satisfy your trophy wife?

I don’t get what the is the ultimate goal of all the destruction.

I feel the same way right now about politics.

So someone in the Obama administration got a FISA warrant to do some e-surveillance on Trump’s people.  There has been some discussion of “deep state” entrenched bureaucrats, left over from the Obama admin, going after Trump from inside the government.  Mark Levin was on Fox News listing all the MSM stories covering the Obama surveillance of Trump and his people.  Michael Moore (who is looking more and more like an old lesbian spinster) wants Obama holdovers to take down Trump.

Here’s the thing, let’s say it is all true.  Obama did spy on Trump and his people and install Obama agents in the government to take out Trump by collecting and leaking Trump info until his is impeached or resigns in shame.  What is the end game?

If you think the Dems hate Trump, they have to hate Pence more.  After Pence is Paul Ryan.  Republicans may think hes a RINO, but the Dems don’t like him either.  The line of succession doesn’t hit a Democrat until place No 8, and before that you have No. 6, James Mattis as an Independent (although I could have President Mad Dog Mattis).

Under no scenario is Trump replaces with Hillary or is a special election called to do that.

What are they trying to accomplish?  Simply destroying an Administration without a plan to replace it is insane.  If a bunch of Obama plants manage to take out an entire elected Administration, i.e., Trump and Pence, our government is over.  What is the point of an election if some entrenched bureaucrats can undo it?

Is the Dem plan is to take their ball and go home?  Because I can’t see this country holding together if one party’s ideology is “if we don’t win the election, we will destroy the stability of government.”

IDPA Match

I shot my first IDPA match in since I lived in South Dakota, this weekend.  Also it was the first time with this gun and the sights I had put on it, shooting CDP class.

I survived halfway through the gunfight, coming in exactly in tho 50% percentile.

I have been shooting steel challenge recently and I need to overcome that mindset.

M shooting was good, having a decently low PD, it was the half dozen procedurals that killed me, literally.  Who needs cover when you are shooting steel plates?

I think I’m going to make the jump from Steel Challenge to IDPA a more permanent thing.  What I need to do is really start practicing my footwork.

You can’t miss fast enough to win a gunfight, I know that.  But standing squared up, broad side to a baddie to get a clean shot is probably a good way to lose one.

More economic idiocy

In the last couple of days, Miguel and I have addressed some clear cut examples of economic stupidity from the Left.  How both soda taxes and gun bans have resulted in revenue and job loses for the cities and states that imposed them.

That level of dumb is just regular, run of the mill, Liberal dumb.  I have found what I believe to be, pure, distilled, 200 proof Liberal dumb.

Brianna Wu, the Social Justice Warrior, professional #gamergate victim,  and failed video game developer, is running for Congress in Boston in 2018.

She is also, clearly, a crazy person.  Confusing Elon Musk with Robert A. Heinlein, she is convinced that Space X wants to go to the moon to launch moon rocks at the earth as kinetic bombardment for … reasons.

In her mind, the plan is:

  1. Private company goes to the moon
  2. Launches moon rocks at earth
  3. ?
  4. Profit

She is also SUPER PROGRESSIVE.

This Tweet is obviously aimed at Conservatives.  What is crazy about this is, in America, that already happens.  Conservatives are the ones arguing to keep it that way by preventing the radical Muslims who support ISIS and throw gays off buildings or hang them from cranes, from making to America to preserve the safety of the LGBT community.  Keep in mind that it was a radical Muslim and not a Republican that shot up the Pulse nightclub.

But we’re still not at peak Wu yet.  Brace yourselves.

There you have it.  Universal Basic Income.  Full Communism repackaged.

Why does she support UBI?  Because…

SERIOUSLY!!!

Yep, we need Communism because robots took good human jobs.  This is even dumber than Obama blaming ATM machines for high unemployment.  It’s not like technology has never made a job obsolete before.  I know that the iceman still delivers big blocks of ice to my house even though I have a refrigerator.

And just how are we going to pay for this?

By taxing the robots, of course.

MIND BLOWN!!!

I didn’t know that the robots we have at work that load parts for heat treat or do precision surface grinding got paid?  Does a CNC make the same hourly wage as a machinist?  Do ATM machines have to report the cash they are filled with as gross income?  How does a robot fill out a W2 or 1040?

There are so many questions here.

On the plus side, I guess that means as a human, I am not going to be subject to robot taxes, which is good I guess….

This person is clearly operating in a slightly different world than the rest of us, the scary thing is, as a super Progressive (possibly Transgender) SJW, she stands a chance of winning among the Bernie Bros crowd in a Liberal enough city.  Don’t laugh, Maxine Waters has been in Congress since 1990.
