Dead J mentioned subsonic .22LR while I get around getting a can and I just happened to score some this afternoon.

Regarding ammo: I can find .22LR, 5.56, 9 mm and even 7.62 Russian in quantities. .308 and 30-06 in less generous amounts and I even saw some Mosin Nagant ammo. But 30-30s? Dry wells everywhere. I wanted to get some for the BiL, but damn! It is like they hide it when they see me come in or there is just none to be get.

  1. CCI quiet-22 is GREAT stuff –
it comes in several differnt bullets for target and hunting – stay with the 710fps ones for quietness, as there are faster CCI quiet-22 ammo 1000fps +/- too.
Now you just need to get a Ruger10-22 take down, and then the integrelly suppressed front end. (https://www.ruger.com/micros/silent-sr-ISB/index.html)
If you hold the bolt closed with your finger it is “hollywood” quiet – all you can hear is the bullet strike. – – – well – – – at least that’s what a “friend” tells me

  2. “Plinking” .22 subsonic has often trouble cycling semi-autos. Note that a suppressor might increase the pressure acting on the cartridge and thus a weapon might cycle with suppressor attached and ss-rounds but not without.

“Hunting” .22 subsonic is a better choice if you want reliability but is often more expensive, like 3-4 times more expensive.

  3. 30-06 is five dollars a pop.

I’m planning on buying another case. I’m just uncertain if I should buy a case of 7.62×39, 5.56 or .38 special. I’m leaning towards the 7.62×39 for obvious reasons but I know it’s gonna be about a year before things get really hard to find when the importer licenses start expiring. Hopefully by then we will have some alternatives.

But at the same time I want to shoot revolver and I’ve been sitting on my .357 magnum. I think I’ve only shot 100 rounds this year and will probably not shoot any more of it. At least .38 special you can kind of find.

  4. You can find .30-30 on AmmoSeek, for instance, but it’s starting at around $1.75/rnd.

So … How well do you like your brother-in-law? 🙂

  5. Aye strongly seconded here! 30-30 or the Rural AK is nowhere to be seen outside of gun show resellers that I’ve found.

Those CCI Quiets are a hoot to shoot out of a can and have outperformed the old gold standard Aguila subsonic. They really shine out of a suppressed .22 pistol and sample size of one here haven’t had problems running them suppressed out of the M&P .22 compact but some guns like ’em some don’t and wont cycle. If it gives ya fits look for the CCI Quiet Semi-Auto

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
